I know the balisong is a martial arts weapon. And I know the balisong originated in the phillipines. But what I don't know and want to know is if they teach how to manipulate a balisong in any type or style of Filipino Martial Arts?

Though I have never personally seen him work the balisong, Tuhon Chris Sayoc (Sayoc Kali) is supposed to have more than a working knowledge with it

Also, GM Ernesto Presas teaches Balisong (Kombatan), as does Amante P Marinas (Pananandata Marinas). Jeff Imada has done a lot with the balisong and he is ranked in Kali under Guro Dan Inosanto. I know Edgar Sulite did a book on the subject...here's Smoke's review on it:

also here's a review also (by smoke)of GM E Presas book:

The balisong videos put out by Panther are done by students of the late Guro Ted Lucaylucay. for info on them check out this thread:

I am certain I'm missing plenty of people, but that's all i could think of off the top of my head.

just my 2 cents

T.O.
Guro Ted Lucaylucay taught the Balisong as part of the advanced curriculum. He concentrated on combative application. The only openings shown were those necessary for the Balisong's use in fighting. A large portion of the training was on how to use the Balisong in the closed position and if necessary open it in the flow of combat for more lethal application.

I'm the guy who did the Panther tapes mentioned above and we did try to capture this. Each of the 3 tapes is about 50% openings and 50% fighting moves.

Most FMA schools shy away from the Balisong because it is illegal so many places. Also, the public perception of the Balisong as an 'Evil knife', keeps it from being taught openly.

Most do not think that the butterfly knife originated in the PI.
France is the current bet.
German examples also pre date the PI.

Hello,
The Balisong is taught in the FMA of Pekiti Tirsia. Grand Tuhon Gaje's nephew Rommel Tortal demonstrates some openings into strikes on one of the videos from LionHeart. Warriors of the Negroes. Not currently available anymore. With the advent of modern clip knives many FMA have adopted there use instead. Mat Marianas has taught its use and even throws in his classes.
All the best
Steve
