Baliyo weak spot

I wanted to bring this up somewhere and as Baliyo's are made more or less by Spyderco I came here, maybe hoping Sal or someone else will see it and do something about the matter.

The Baliyo is a great product and I absolutely love it, it's something to quench my thirst for flipping while at work, school or anywhere else for that matter. But it's definitely not perfect.

Several Baliyo users have probably experienced this:

The crack is in the handle where the brass ring is.

I'm just baffled that Spyderco put out a product with such a weakness. The plastic on that spot is just a millimeter or two thick and many users like I have snapped it in one or more places. So I'm requesting if the design could be improved, all that it needs is a bit more plastic on the spot.

If I lived in the States I'd just send it back but from way out here it's too much of a hassle. So I'll fix it with some epoxy.

Yep, you're definitely not the only one. Mine broke after a couple of weeks and I haven't bothered to replace it yet.

Am I correct in thinking that that's one of the Chinese-made ones...? It looks like a steel weight. The overseas ones do seem to have a more brittle plastic.

2 of mine did this as well, I absolutely love spyderco but i think there needs to be a design change...

+1
I was expecting a more robust product. It was fun while it lasted, but it was kind of like Fisher-pen meets Fisher-Price :p.

I've had mine for over a year and two months and haven't seen anything like that.

I assume that I haven't used mine as much as some of you.
My red, white, and blue is still intact. I'm crossing my fingers. :D

Of the 3 I have had 2 broke at that same place. They still worked just fine though.

one of my RWB's did that (first one), but it got dropped A LOT!! the other RWB, the Grey, the Orange and Pink (daughters), and the black china made one, are all fine.

it is a failure point, but with not too many drops, it doesn't seem to happen much.

Repair with a little 2 ton epoxy. You shouldn't have any trouble after that.

Yea I just yesterday put a nice clump of epoxy on it, seems to work fine.
Hell, the same stuff held my tang pin on my ccc bali in place for quite some time. :D

I'm sure that something will be done to address this. Spyderco doesn't let this sort of thing fly. What they end up doing to fix the problem I'm not sure of. Maybe make it out of FRN instead of thermoplastic? They could probably even use the same molds.

Well, I have not had that problem.

What has Spyderco Customer Service said about this?

Marion

Haven't really asked them about this as I live in Europe I would probably not be sending it back to them.
But why the hell not, I'll give it a go and at least notify of the problem.

Ok I contacted Spyderco, mainly to notify of the existing problem:
Hello I have been flipping my Baliyo for a couple months now and then it kind of broke. A picture: http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t210/Krepo11/Crack2.jpg The crack is in the spot where the plastic wraps around the brass ring. I live in Europe and as it is a cheaper product I would rather not bother sending it in for repairs or anything as the total shipping would cost more than the product itself. As I made a thread on Bladeforums.com on the Spyderco section I got several replies stating that they have had the exact same problem. So I am basicly making sure you are aware of the existing problem. And I hope that something could be done to the products design itself to prevent it from happening again. Thank you.

And here's the response:
Generally we ask that you send in any product that you are having trouble with for warranty evaluation. Given the fact you are over seas I will ship you a replacement. Which color do you have or which color would you like your replacement to be. Regarding the crack, I'm not saying that it's why it happened but I do know if the BaliYo's are dropped on a hard surface they can crack. Regardless, please reply with an address & which BaliYo you want & I'll ship out a replacement this time. If you could send me (e-mail) a copy of your receipt that would be helpful.

Thank you and have a great day,
