Ball and Detent question

I have never taken apart a Sebenza, so for those of you who have, here is my questions. My woodie was just a safe queen. Way too pretty!

Does the ball actually roll around in the frame, like in a pocket?
Is it made of ceramic, or heat treated steel?
Are all of them the same in all of Chris Reeves folders?
Has anyone ever had one wear out?
How is it held in the frame?

I just have a need to know.
Thanks in advance.
I really want to get a Mnandi, for a user :)
Dave.

A detent ball is usually pressed in a slightly undersized hole, so it doesn't roll.

nope

ceramic

yup

Has anyone ever had one wear out?

ANYTHING is possible, but you SHOULD know that knifesurbation could cause blindness, and is humiliating for your mother when you get caught!

How is it held in the frame?

The ball fits perfectly in the hole drilled for it... then, just nect to the hole, the area is "peened" which pushes the Ti into the ball just higher than midpoint, locking it into postion.

Thanks all for the information. I just had a need to know. If I start needing glasses, I will slow up! :) :)

Back to this question again, a few of the framelocks I have, during the rotation of the blade, I can feel what seems to be "lash" or "takeup" space before detent ball friction takes over. Any one else notice this? It does not do it on all, just some. Just curious.

You mean like the hole is a little too big on the blade and there is a minute amount of slop before the detent gets to the edge of the hole?

If so yes, I have noticed this is some folders.

Something like that. Perhaps the dimple in the blade is fractionally off from the detent ball on the lock.

This is a result of a large ball and detent. ...so the detent grabs the first exposed portion of the ball and "sucks" it to the middle... the larger the ball, the further it's radius... the greater the "suckng" effect. ...my Microtech Socom offered this effect. I like it, and in my simple opinion, I'd like to see a larger ball, and deeper detent on Sebenzas.

Yes, at the detent hole to a degree, but also in the radius of the arc, away from the hole. While in the arc, there seems to be an amount of "ball play" before actual ball friction sliding occurs. I know this sounds weird, but my old Sebbie had it. And no, I never took it apart to investigate further.

Dave.
