Ball bearing raceways

Not the easiest question to answer. Quality bearings are usually made of 440cor 52100 steel ( good knife steels). Cheaper bearings are made of cheaper material. I your bearings have a mfg name on them, go to their website and look up the specifications for the bearings you have. Otherwise you will have to make some assumptions and hope for the best.

Hmmm. I'll check my settings on Flickr. Actually pay for storage there and I want to be able to send things up via phone, and then post them when I need them. I'll check and see what happened.

I'm signed int o Flickr, but I don't have permission to view your photo. Either way, if they're a brand name bearing, there's a good chance it's a usable steel. Cut off a small coupon, run it through a heat treat process for 52100 and test it out.

I have access to a unlimited amount of bearing races from the local potash mines. I stopped using them because they were very inconsistent out of the heat treat. Also they etched differently. My conclusion was that they were made of a lot of different metals.

In the food industry they use BG-42 ball bearings for conveyors because it is a high purity stainless steel. 52100 is a high purity Carbon ball bearing steel. I don’t know what the races and cages are made of, but BG-42 would probably work.
