Ball bearings?

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a knife from Mr. Walter Brend, one of his Marauders and I am BEYOND impressed with it. He told me that the knife has a total of 36 ball bearings in it. I'm curious if anyone knows how many ball bearings the Sebenza 21 and 25 have?? I take it the more the better??

I guess the steel used to make the bearings also comes into play. Just curious folks...

Sebenza 21=0 they use PB washers, so much for more is better :)
PB washers, bearings, Teflon/nylon washers-they all work. Some work better in certain designs and some are just a makers preference. I have knives with each.

Pardon my ignorance, just learning here. What does the "PB" stand for? And you specified the Sebenza 21. Does the Sebenza 25 have ball bearings...or does that also have a "PB" washer? Thanks!

PB means phosphor-bronze I believe. The 25 also has washers, no bearings in any CRK knives.

Bearings are nice but Sebenza's don't need them. Once broken in, they are very smooth.

Bearings are typically used in flippers but there are many exceptions. I would personally be very surprised if CRK ever offers a folder with bearings.

True, I have a couple of hand made folders (non flippers) that work very well on bearings.

Doubtful, but it would be worth a look if they did. Perhaps in the form of a collaboration with another maker?
:foot:

Edit: See below, Ti-Lock runs on bearings.

bearings? nah, overcomplicates the simplicity of CRK knives. I think that's why CR makes em that way: easy to disassemble and all. i love the 21 for how easy and simple it is to take apart.

I have a flipper with single row ball bearings and yeah, it flips out fasssst and drops closed without effort. But i love teh hydraulic'ness of the CRK's - gives em both different personalities.

You guys are wrong about no CRK having ball bearings. The Ti-Lock has them and its a Chris Reeves made knife.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. I don't believe I've ever handled a Ti-Lock. Thanks for the info.

I've handled one for a few minutes. Did not notice any difference on the action compared to my smooth 21s... but I did not know that the Ti-Locks are on bearings... lol

Yes they have bearing made into the washers only, a part you can easily replace, which is nice. I've only damaged the washers once and that was my fault. I opened the knife and bent the washer. I just sent it in to have crk give me a new washer, and my screw up was fixed.

Thanks for clearing this up for me fellas. I'm not the only one who learned something. Thanks!

I don't think knives need the bearings system, the PB washers work just fine, they are simple and mostly clean. With bearings, you have added complexity and much more room for gunk to build up. I have a couple of BB knives, they are ok, but I don't put them into dirt.:)

If you ever try to take apart a BB knife you will never want another one:) I am still picture chasing those little balls all over the table and floor...
