Ball detent in the blade

I took my small classic 2000 apart last night for a clean & lube and noticed that there is a ball detent "hole on both sides of the blade.

Anyone know the reason for the hole in the "non locking side" of the blade please?

this is only a guess....maybe it's to facilitate a simplification in the process for making a left handed sebbie? that way they could use the same blade blanks and not have to do a special run? i dunno?

I did wonder about that as mine is a left handed one but the locking tang part of the blade has to be cut the opposite way for a leftie anyway?
