Ball detent not Engaging. Normal Operation?

Aloha.

On the liner lock side of the Blade of my P-SARK the ball detent doesn't go all the way to the hole and as far as I can see it doesn't do anything to help hold the blade closed you can see this in thefirst picture

It is plain to see that the detent on the non linerlock side engages the hole where it is supposed to. This is illustrated in the second picture

Is this normal operation or is there a problem here? The blade flicks out very easily with a light movement of the wrist. I think there is sufficient pressure to keep the Blade closed while it is in my pocket but I don't want this considered some kind of "gravity opening knife" or something and if I was wearing loose pants I suppose that there is a slight chance of the blade opening in my pocket and hooking me up with a little of the slicey dicey on my pants or on my leg. Thanks in advance for the help

edited to fix my stupid link mistakes

It's the same with my SpecWar-B. Looks like only one ball should engage. The one in a liner is just for smooooth opening and keeps the liner out of the blade to prevent marking the surface (and black coating on my SpecWar).

Hmmm, I dunno about that. If it were the case, why put the hole in the blade? I think it IS supposed to engage, and the hole was put in the wrong place. Derek?

This is how it was explained to me:

Back in the day there was one ball on the knife. It was embedded into the lock, and its job was to fall into the little hole of the blade when the knife was being closed. It is the "detent" and it detains the blade. It is an important safety feature of the knife, allowing the knife to "snap" shut, and preventing it from opening when it is not intended.

The lock however, is different. Its job is to be sure that the blade stays locked open. I know that all of you know this already.

When the detent ball was on the lock, these two extremely important mechanisms were interconnected. The motive for putting the detent on the opposite side, was to address, and perfect, each facet, the lock and the detent, independant of eachother.

Example: if you have a knife and the detent and the lock are contigent on the same piece of stressed metal, and one, lets say the lock is perfect, the way you like it. It locks up nice and solid. But, lets say, the detent is a tad bit "strong" for your taste. What do you do? To "ease off " the detent also means that you are easing off on the lock, and that would not be a good thing.

So, EKI decided to put the detent on the opposite side, so the lock and the detent can dealt with separately on each knife.

The ball on the lock is there to separate the liner from the blade, as PiterM mentioned, and is not meant to fall into any hole. the ball on the opposite side is what does the detent. I think the hole that the detent ball falls into, protrudes the entire width of the blade, that is why it is on the lock side, but the ball doesn't fall into it.

I know of a couple of guys who have sent their knives back for repair, and when they were returned they had this new configuration.
Is this easier from a manufacturing perspective? Well, there are twice as many balls to make, and twice as many liners to stress. So the primary objective must be our safety.
Don't you feel loved?;)

So, anyways. That is my $0.02

MALAZO thanks for explaining this to me. of course your explanation makes perfect sense.

When I first got the knife the blade was not closing and it was Clipping the outside of the liner on the lock side. I bent the non lock side back so that there was less pressure on the blade from that side and the problem was fixed. I guess I just bent it too much. I just got done bending it back a little and the blade now closes but just barely misses the liner so that's ok. I also put a little more tension on the pivot screw and used locktite so that It wouldn't come loose. Now it requires a much harder flick and I don't think it will accidentilly open on me anymore. now it feels REEL GOOD and hopefully with stay like that for LONG TIME. :D

TURBOLARD: is number 15 special to you I could always find it in my heart to trade it for another PSARK and a LNIB mini cqc7 b plainedge
