I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the ball detent mechanism. How well does it work? Is it outdated or has it stood the test of time..?
 
Chris Reeve Knives still use Ball detent along with tons of other knife brands. Almost any knife with a liner or frame lock are using ball detents.
 
Good or not depend on the pressure the ball detent is on the blade and depends on the blade. Ball could (and have for some of mine) wear a channel into the blade and in the end the detent is reduced.

Not all are like this, I have a suspicion that the CRK Umnumzaan would not be so affected by this, the ball is huge in the Umnum.
