This was an old rusty unmarked ball peen hammer. I'm guessing it's L-6 steel ...definitely a good amount of carbon with maybe some nickel and/or chromium in there too.

Now it's a tomahawk. OAL is 16 1/8", hawk head length is 4 7/8", blade length is 2 1/2", coup spike length 1 1/4". Cherry haft cut and hand sanded out of 3/4" cherry stock.

Thanks.
I don't know, I just finished it ...although it didn't seem to have a problem taking several chunks out of the edge of the workbench :)

Thats pretty cool !! What is the copper looking band I see at the top ? just decoration ?
I like , I like !! :)

Thanks.
There is a little channel or ledge in the metal lip running around the inside of the top edge. I filled it with hammered copper to assist the 'wedge' in locking the haft into position.

Thanks.
That's an old Italian reproduction of a .31 Colt 1848 Baby Dragoon.
