what steel are ball pein hammers made from and are all hammers the same or do some companies use different steel. What seems to work the best for a tomahawk and why. Looking for a good hammer poll tomahawk and just needed some info there seems to be alot of cheap stuf and I would rather have quality in the steel as well as the workmanship. any help is greatly appreciated

All different, Ive heard everything from 4140 to 1080..Just look for good quality hammers. Like Plumb, Vaughn, Bluegrass, etc...Generally the better the brand the better the steel..

OK, here's my guess, I've been told the older hammers are made of approx 1065 steel. I've made hawks out of them for some time. I don't like the metal in the newer hammers but I can't give you a definitive reason why?!
For a 2"+ blade, you'll need to start with at least a 24oz hammer. Butch, when he chimes in, will have a better answer, he does way more hawks than I do.

I am interested also. Have been collecting heads at flea markets etc in anticipation of getting my forge going. So far I have an anvil / few hammers / coal forge in pieces :)

I use Vaughn 24 oz hammers part # s224. I buy them by the case. They are made from 1080 per Vaughn. Not all are made from the same steel. So you really never know. I use the Vaughn because they were the only ones to email back and tell me what the steel was.
