This is an odd question, but a friend called me up today and asked me what I knew about ballistic knives, me being a knifenut. I was stunned to say I know nothing. The only thing I found was a picture and a short Wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_knife

Does anyone on here know anything about ballistic knives, it says they were only made during the cold war, but widely distributed, the blade is propelled at 39 miles per hour out of the handle! Seems awesome to me, was wondering what anyone knows, if anyone has one, and how much they cost, of course if someone has one as they are illegal all throughout the US.

Thanks

I remember seeing them for sale in Soldier of Fortune magazine back in the 1980s. Can't remember how much.

They were banned shortly after introduction. They are crudely made cheap knives, more a scary idea than an effective weapon. I see no reason to own one. I have to check the federal law, but I believe they are regulated in a similar manner to switchblades in which importation, movement as merchandise accross state lines and possession in certain federal holdings are banned, but remember states are not federal holdings, and therefore just as with switchblades they maybe legal in some states.

here is the federal law link:

it seems like switchblades they are not as totally illegal as most people think. There are added penalities for use in a crime for it.

You could easily machine your own ballistic knife with a few tools.

A few tools like a milling machine you mean. :p

Those knives are a bit of a romantic idea IMO, I think of them as an arm that can only punch once.......

You can do almost anything with a milling machine.

Bigmark408 told me to look into Sherline for a desktop mill.

Tried a ballistyc knife years ago.99% dangerous, fantasy/gimick. You needed arms like Arnie to compress the spring. Once loaded the lock up was flimsy and dangerous, had a misfire which was fortunately pointing towards the ground and not me. The blade was pretty well useless and there was also a optional baton and grappling hook which could be fired. I find it hard to believe that the Russian Spetznaz ever invented or used these, more likely some fiction writers design. As a matter of interest check out WASP gas injecting knives useful for killing bears, sharks and water melons.
