Does anyne use Ballistol on their knives? Have heard that it is a good product and may not be harmful if ingested. Can use on metal, plastic, leather etc. Thanks, Loosearrow

Yes to your questions. Look at Ballistol.com and you will see all the uses for it. This product will emulisify with water if it gets wet and does not wash off but continues to work. This my favorite of the wet lubes. This stuff works good on knife handles and is non-toxic. I have used most of the lubes and this and Mil-tec are the ones I used the most. Tuff Glide is good, too and it is a dry lube like Mil-Tec.

I use it on guns and have been quite happy with it - it even seems useful on leather.

It does have a funky smell but you get used to it...

Great on guns. I have an old knife that was made from a file that I keep in the RV and it was always rusted when I went to use it. Cleaned it up and gave it a good Ballistol wipedown and it has been rust-free since (a couple of years). I give it a thumbs-up for rust prevention.

I got my first bottle from Spyderco Outlet Store several years ago. This product will make old G10 handles look like new. I like the non-toxic feature as well because some lube products have some pretty bad elements.

I really like Ballistol. It makes maintenance of knives so much easier when you know it is fine to use on handles as well as the metal. Also good that it is fine for leather. And you can drink it if you really wanted to.

Just be careful with nickel silver as it will slowly turn it yellow/gold color.

I've heard lots of good things about Ballistol. Some post from Yvsa; which, of course, I can't find right now; mentioned that Ballistol isn't the best at doing any one job, but does so many jobs very well that it doesn't matter.

After five or so years of reading, I finally broke down and ordered a bottle from www.ragweedforge.com last night.

I like Mil-Tec a lot but it has no rust preventive properties and needs to be heated to be most effective. I have tried dry lubes and one that comes to mind is Tuff Glide and it works fine so if lint and dust is problem that is the one to use. But I seem to be using Ballistol most of the time. So many different uses.

I have been using Militec for some time now. Recently, I have gotten Ballistol to clean my guns and it works great. I really want to use it on my knives, but I'm worried about what it might do to the phosphor bronze washers. Does anyone know for sure if it is safe?

Ballistol is a good jack of all trades lubricant. I use it mixed with water to clean cartridge black powder guns (10 to 1 water/ballistol mix).

However, being a jack of all trades, it's not the best at anything.

I have gotten rust on objects originally protected with Ballistol.

I now use Break Free CLP for rust protection - MUCH better!

As a liquid lubricant for friction reduction - Break Free is also much better.

As a water soluable oil, Ballistol works very good.

OK on wood and leather, but not great.

I've been looking at info about Ballistol and find many references to it being "biodegradable", "environmentally safe", "non-petrolium", etc. I have to wonder why since it's major ingredient is mineral oil, which is a by-product of gasoline production.

I think if you'll look more carefully, the makers of Ballistol never say that it is non-petroleum. Maybe some of the people that sell if have misinterpreted the claims.
