Bam!!!

I was just about to post the same link! It is a shame that this was covered so poorly by the media. It is the Biggest thing that mankind has done in space since the first lunar landing. We have just manage to travel 83 million miles and hit a target with Earth's first space kenetic weapon (an 380kg projectile traveling at 23,000 miles per hour).

I am sure that China got the message (it was timed to be clearly visible from their hemisphere on our independece day....hmmm).

The moment of impact (remember that rock is about the size of Manhattan)

(edit: s/b 83 i/o 53 million miles)

I don't know if I'd go that far. Voyager has been a huge success. And those two Mars rovers, Spirit and Discovery, now there's a huge success.

Now that's some 4th of July fireworks!

My parents were over at David Levy's (as in Schuemacher-Levy 9, the comet that hit Jupiter) house tonight watching it. I wish I didn't have to be stuck at work. :grumpy:

$ 333 million to whack a comet ???

Actually the spacecraft will bring back to earth a sample of the material jetison from the comet after the collision. The material is believed to be the original primordial material from the formation of our solar system. We will be able to tell what our solar system was made from.

yeah, more cool stuff to put on the NEW Oakley sunglasses!

:eek: ;)
