Bamboo Eradication

Bamboo might make a great natural privacy fence, come in handy for all kinds of little projects and look quite ornamental in your garden, but be careful: that stuff will spread like the plague. A friend of mine has some at his place that the former owner planted. Occasionally, it needs to be purged. I fervently believe that if you're going to have a Bamboo inquisition, you might as well have fun with it and use it as an excuse to break out some steel: A Swabbie, BK-4 and Cutlass Machete. I figured I would share a few pictures and a few thoughts after using these three together over the course of an afternoon.

I don't think I have a knife as fun as the Swabbie.... Just because it doesn't take itself too seriously doesn't mean you shouldn't. It's a fast, sharp piece of steel that makes you want to plunder. Once it got swinging, it was nothing to lop through two or three stalks cleanly. The main draw was that the hook on the pommel was a bit abrasive on the bottom of my pinky finger. I may smooth the coating, round it down a bit and it should be good to go.

Oh, we also swabbied a few logs for the heck of it...

Like I said, it's a fun blade to use. :D

Finally, I'd be an awful Beckerhead if I didn't include one.

The BK-4 Machax! Light and fast with Ethan's excellent handles. The Machax was my favorite to use. With one after another cleanly cut through with a satisfying "thwop," I could quickly clear a nice, clean path through the bamboo. It was also the most comfortable to swing around.... I just wish I had brought the BK9 too.

My friend had just taken possession of a Cutlass Machete. It is sharp, comfortable to use and eradicated bamboo without prejudice. A tremendous value for the money.

That's about all I have. My phone decided that I needed to purge some of my pictures. We put the hurt on the bamboo and had a blast. Piled it up to burn it and watch the show. If you haven't burned green bamboo, you're in for a treat if you ever do need to burn it. :D

Woot! Ethan loves to test big blades on bamboo. If a blade will go through a big piece of bamboo in one swipe, he likey.
Be careful of deflection if you try it yourself. If the angle of attack isn't steep enough, the blade can skip pretty easily.

Yes it can. Deflection can also lead a sore shin.... To say the least. :thumbdn:

Mmm Swabbie... I just like saying it... SWABBIE!

Sweet pictures  looks like fun

That is cool, Nice array of tools.

I wish we had bamboo in Maine.

Jeremy

No you don't. It's a noxious weed that will take over an area. And it grows like a weed too. Roots get into septic drain fields and clog them like a dam. They will relentlessly spread like a world eating amoeba. Even the "new growth" dulls a lawn mower blade quickly if you hit a small one. Left alone, it will take over an area exclusively, killing out all native vegetation and eliminating natural food sources for wild critters. Fun to chop occasionally, but an absolute nightmare as far as controlling it goes. I totally kill it out every chance I get. Chop it off and dose it w/ brush killer using a paint brush. There are less obnoxious things out there to grow for chopping. Bamboo is just an invasive non-native irritant.

Thanks. I know - right?

Thanks. We were going to have to battle the bamboo regardless, we might as well have some fun with it.

Exactly. It'll be back in force.

Looks pretty fun.

Which one do you think performed best?
It was a close one between the 4 and the cutlass. Yes, the Swabbie was the most fun; however, I'd pick the 4. My friend liked the cutlass better. I wish I had the 9 or 5 with me..... Maybe if it starts to grow back in later this summer we'll have to revisit this. I have a hunch the 5 would really shine with the 2" and under bamboo we were lopping down.

in a month or so the shoots will start popping up -- harvest those and you can make an awesome slaw while limiting this year's expansion.

Cool. I need to get me a 4.

Looks like a bamboo battle bladefest! I would have taken everything I got for that. There's plenty around here for the same reasons you listed above but I don't know anyone who actually owns it. I don't have a swabbie but I have the cutlass, kukri, 9, and 4 just came today so you bet ur buns I'm gonna bolo after seeing this. In fact, i just remembered i have a job next week at a hotel where theres lots of bamboo. They recently put a fence up tho so it may be hard to access. Theres stalks there at least 30' tall and 6-8" round. I'll have to carry them with me daily til this job pops up. Just waiting for parts then we'll shoot over immediately. I'll be sure to post the aftermath! Thanks for sharing!

If the bamboo was intrusive before then you've now gone beyond that and made it downright dangerous :) now it looks life a forest of punji stakes :D but it looks like it would've been super fun. As business class as the 4 and the cutlass are that Swabbie looks like so much entAARRRGGHHtainment (sorry I couldn't help myself). Does it cut better if you wear an eye patch? My assumption is yes.

Cool photos. I need to get me a machax and soon.

Bamboo can be generally divided into clumping and running species. If you want to plant bamboo, planting a clumping species is highly recommended. Runners need thick concrete pots or ground barriers.

That looks like fun. I used to do some tamashigiri with Katanas. Some bamboo would be a blast to let loose on.

As far as the punji stakes go, it keeps the kids off his lawn. :D Nah - We cut them all down pretty low when we weren't goofing around. And yes, a hearty ARRRRGH or AVAST, Me HEARTIES really takes the Swabbies performance up a notch. You would also be surprised at how well it can be controlled with just a hook instead of a hand.

WOW! Look at all that flute material!
I don't know about flutes, but we made a few shot glasses from one of the pieces we didn't burn. :D

We have lots of bamboos here in my place. I have a 9 but I don't have a 4. Your photo of the machax makes me want to have one!

Oh it's not so bad. If you want to get rid of it without chemicals you just need to chop it down, use a mattock to dig up all the roots, and then keep doing that a couple times a year for the rest of your life... easy peasy
