I thought you'd like to see the latest WIP (work in progress) pics from Ban on my Drop Point EDC in S35. This will be my backpacking knife so Ban designed it to be very light. You can see that it is thin with extra drilling in the handle. Ban made it full convex for me as I'm a big fan of stropping. I'm taking it on my Denali adventure at the end of May; I'm so excited!

This is pretty much exactly what I'm going to get from Ban next, so I'm eager to see how it turns out. S35VN from Ban has performed very well for me too.

Just got finished. I really enjoy these Drop EDCs in thinner material. Will most likely do some in M4 and 3V running them on the harder side.

Sweet! Gulliamo, you're in for a treat!

How thin, Ban? I'd be willing to try either M4 or 3V, probably M4 edges out in a small blade like this unless chipping is a problem. But for backpacking, I'd probably want to get one in S35VN or a just as good stainless, less worry.

I think this came out around .090 or so. Didn't get a chance to mic it yet. I like s35vn quite a bit. It has a lot of good qualities that I want for a easy maintenance knife. 3v is probably still my favorite all around steel. Not quite stainless but still relatively stain resistant. I like to push the edge geometry with 3v because of its toughness at relatively high rc. M4 is quite tough as well with ridiculous edge holding. Only reason it's not my fav is because it rust pretty easily compared to 3v and s35vn. Easily trumps both in edge holding. I have a thin drop edc in M4 that has been heat treated. Will probably temper it around 64rc. It should cut a long while before needing a touch up.

So 3V does pretty well in the corrosion resistance department, despite not being stainless? Hmmm...maybe 3V is worth the try, and like you said, you can get it thin because of the toughness.

I'm so excited! I'll post lots of pics of it in use when I return from Denali.

The 3v would be nice but I needed something that could be wet and dirty for days on end without shot of oil in sight. (Pack an oz of oil or another oz of food? Easy choice! )

Now who can help me decide the best carry method with a pack? I generally prefer horizontal carry but it doesn't work with a heavy pack and large waist belt. I want it on me - not the pack. I'm thinking a drop loop on the sheath...

Thoughts?

Yeah, that's typically why I go for stainless too for backpacking.

Horizontal carry should work just fine with a pack hipbelt. I carry my Fallkniven WM1 that way, no problem, can't find a good picture showing it right now. Otherwise, a drop loop is just the ticket. I use a drop loop on knives larger than my WM1.

First report from the field: It functions as well as it looks!

I'll post a full review once I get back from Denali and have put it through it's paces but craftsmanship is flawless. And just in case you didn't know - when Ban says "stupid sharp" he means it!

Good! Can't wait to get my own later this year. You work out the dangler situation?

HikingMano: No. :( I'm going to call your sheath guy tomorrow and see if he can make me the dangler portion before I leave. I want to keep Ban's sheath though as it is so nice - it snaps the knife in gripping the handle and not the blade (done the right way IMO).

This is my failed attempt to make my own... :( I used a mini TekLok with it this weekend. Ban lined up the holes perfectly.

Hey bro! I hope all is well...I'll be back in the US for a brief period in July - any chance I could get my Drop Point EDC in M4 that I ordered before I left by then? Am itchin for some new steel, and with how well your kiridashi has been serving me, I'd love to have another piece of yours to work with down here.

that edc looks great btw!

I replied in the other thread with some suggestions, you can try that if Kiah isn't able to get you in before your trip. I do know he's extremely busy right now with all the work he's doing for Survive Knives.

Ban's sheaths are indeed nice too, I've been using the one he made for my Mini-Bowie with a small teklok and it was great
