I have some band saw blade material that was used on a Saw Mizer saw mill. The fellow that gave it to me said it is silicon steel. I am interested in making some small woodcarving knives and wonder if this is suitable. If I am careful not to get the blade hot will it need to be heat treated and if so, how?

Don't know about the steel you have but theres a gent in town here that goes around to all the metal working shops and gathers their broken bandsaw blades and makes carving knives from them. Says once they're sharpened they seldom require resharpening and he doesn't do any heat treating to them. He makes them as gifts to boy scouts, very nice gesture!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!
