I am trying to find out what would be the proper horse power for cutting blade steel blanks. I have heard different opinions from part-time makers that I have talked to at gun and knife shows. Would 1/3 Hp be in adequate for stainless steels? All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dan Huff

Jerry, I am currently looking at a Delta model, would that be suficient? Or would some otherbrand be better?

Dan Huff

Whoa, that Delta model is likely a wood cutting bandsaw, and will tear itself up on steel. Metal cutting bandsaws usually have blade speed of around 100sfpm. Wood saws are much faster. I got mine from ENCO, model #505-6840 at $178.95 http:www.use-enco.com

There are many others at about the same price from all the discount machinery houses.

This is the saw that I have:

It isn't the best in the world but it gets the job done. This is the same saw that Enco, Harbor Freight, etc. have to offer. Just get the supplier with the best price at the time. The most important thing is to use a good bi-metal blade. The price from Grizzly right now is $189 but shop around.

Thank you for the answers so far. So the blade speed of 100sfpm be optimal speed for stainless steels?

Dan Huff

Dan, I think mine runs at 120sfpm, but it's been so long since I've even seen the manual, that's only a dim memory. I don't think I'd want to go any faster with my setup.
