I have been tring to find out more about Bando. Can anyone out there tell me what it is about? What are the classes like. What kind of moves do they teach? Any books out I could read. I wrote the American Bando Asso. They did not know of any books, just some magaizines to read back issues. Can anyone inform me more?

Bando is a no frills martial art; Dr. Gyi calls it a "dump truck system" meaning there are no fancy moves. Many times it's not pretty, but it gets the job done. The kukri work is very basic, and from what I've seen, follows the same basic lines as FMA styles, though it is typically longer range than say, the Doce Pares style.

Training consists of practice of cutting various hard and soft targets, including drills developing clean cutting angles, accuracy, timing, drawing, cutting on the move, and resheathing.

Their empty hand work consists of a no-nonsense kickboxing style which appears similar to Muay Thai, but I don't have much experience in Bando, so I cannot say. After meeting Dr. Gyi this past weekend, and having the honor of spending a good amount of time getting to know this incredible man, I can safely say I will be seeking him out for further training in the very near future.

What style khukuri is most used for Bando?
Certainly not a salyan, but how about a 18th century? It is the most lively feeling in my hand. The ww11, and sirupati would be next. I was too late in regestration for the seminar in Calif in Aug.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?
And just what are you going to do with this one that you can't do with the others?
What is the purpose of all these knives anyhow??

Anyone interested in Bando can contact me personally via email or phone and I will put you in touch with the secretary of the American Bando Association. He can direct you to the nearest teacher and give you a great deal of helpful information. I will not mention his name here as it is not in keeping with Bando rules but I will say that he is a customer, friend, gentleman, and a martial artist in the truest sense of the word.

The Bando customers I have almost to the man have several of our khukuris. They use one for ceremony and another for work and play with others. It seems that the WWII is perhaps the preference for work but some will use a 20 inch Ang Khola. It is largely a personal preference.

Sidenote: whenever I think about Bando and Dr. Gyi I get that dumb old folk song "Leader Of The Band" go through my head, except there's an "o" on the end...and then I start making up parody lyrics...?

Or is it just me?

dum da dum dum. etc...

"I'm the only Swede there ever was in MacNamara's band!"

Is that the one you mean Jim?

I just remember snatches..."I'm just the living legacy, of the leader of...the band".

Gawd.
