I almost bought a horizontal\vertical bandsaw from H.F. but I didn't understand how you would make it useable for cutting knives in the vertical position. I didn't have any sort of work table. Should I just wait and buy a vertical model like the make for wood bandsaws. Would a variable speed wood bandsaw work with the right blade?

That's strange,I got mine about 15 years ago and it came with a table that mounts to the lower guide arm.If they don't do it anymore one could be made to work easily enough.A woodsaw won't work, too fast.I'll have to run by HF and take a look at the new ones.Don't need one as mine still runs great but know I'm curious.Dave:)

There are several variations on that same saw out there. Some include the 9x9 table for use in the vertical position.

If you look at the pdf manual for this version, you'll notice the large table in the parts section. perhaps HF just doesn't mention it in the description?

BTW, there is a Wilton Tradesman upright bandsaw that has dual-use variable speed model. Pricey @ $1300 or more. My personal choice if I ever upgrade.

i got mine about 8 months ago and it comes witha little plate to make it a verticle cutter it also comes with a smaller plate to make it horizontal. its realy a good buy for the price. just remeber get more than 1 extra blade when you buy it. aslo the wheel alignmet guide adjusts down. ie. just figured that out last week itll save alot of blade life. if you dont itll jusmp off track quite often and it gets to be a pain. also buy your blades acording to the thickness of metal you will buy. and they dont cut well for curves; it can be done just make some precuts to get the extra metal off in stages and cut in the straightest lines possible. and get a clamp light to see your patern lines.

I just bought one a few weeks ago and it can with thel arger horizontal plate. Question for the gallery. I have read that the blade that it comes with is garbage. What is a good replacement blade? Also, what size and tooth count should i get for cutting 5160, annealed W2 and nickel silver?

You be better served to ditch the HF blades all together and order a good bimetal blade from MSC or Fastenal. They're $6-7 more, but will last well more than twice as long.

Thanks guys I'm gonna check with H.F. again. The manager said it didn't have the work table, but he also said he didn't know how to use one.

Joe you can make a better usable one out of a piece of plate steel. Use the saw to cut a straight slot then turn the small plate upside down and mark the screw holes. If yoiu don't understand email me off theknifegroup site and give me your phone number. You can come see mine in El Reno or I will try to explain to you. Mike Miller

Thats exactly what I did. I made it slightly larger so it would work better than the original and a narrow saw slot so small pieces wouldnt go down and stop the blade. Another advantage is the saw can still be used as a horizontal without removing the table.

Hey Bruce...what brand and type of blades are you using?

I like Lenox diemaster blades. They stay sharp the longest Ive found. I have wood cutting blades made for it at our local saw shop. Wood and micarta will plug up the fine teeth on the metal cutting blades.

I have a little table top wood cutting bandsaw that i got at Wholesale Tool in Tampa. It does an ok job, but the problem is that the mitre fixtures on most power tools only works for cutting or grinding perpindicular. I would make a jig for lengthwise cuts, but the mitre attachment is so flimsy, I would have to make the whole thing from scratch. By the way.....the mitre slot on the HF bandsaw table is nigh useless. I probably have 5 mitre fixtures from various power tools and none of them fit. Do the good blades cut as slow as the HF one? I have some of Don Hanson's square bar W2 and i was thinking about slicing it up into bars, but I don't have that much time in a day:yawn: :D

Thats why a lot of people hammer it! Cut it and forge it to the length you need. You would be amazed at how long a blade you can make from a small rectangular bar. Really makes the steel cost go way down. Mike

These are ridiculously LARGE rectangular bars... . Te smallest is 1 1/8 x 1 1/8. Guess I will wait till my press gets her and the new shed gets built:thumbup:
