I'll be cutting both wood and metal, and possibly different handle materials and maybe even kydex at some point in the future.

Mo:

Save up and buy one of those $199.00 4"x6" horizontal/vertical metal cutting bandsaws. Lots of folks use them and like them. And, you can get bimetal blades for them to cut the blade steel.

Mo,your best bet would be Harbor Freight, get one of their horizontal/vertical metal cutting models.Personally I would go with the 64 1/2" blade model, although you will most likely have to come up with a few more bucks, unless you find one on sale there. You can cut wood w/metal cutting bandsaw but usually not the other way around. You will need both wood & metal blades.

For several years I have used a portable bandsaw that I mounted on a shop-made stand. It's easy to do, and these little bandsaws can be obtained for around $100 or less in most pawn shops. Mine has cut out over 300 blades, and other than a set of brushes and an occasional new blade has served me well. I like the fact that it doesn't take up any floor space (it's mounted on the corner of my workbench). I have a picture of in in the shop tour section of my web site. I don't remember which page it's on, but there is a "portable bandsaw" hyperlink in the text on one of the shop tour pages that will take you to a photo of it.

A lot of people on the forum have mentioned they have the Harbor Freight horizontal/vertical bandsaw. It normally sells for around $199, but one thing about HF, they always put stuff on sale if you are patient. A few days ago, I found the receipt for the one I bought about a year ago for $139 w/free shipping. I have seen it recently for $159. Mine works well for roughing out blades. Some problems with tracking, but it still cuts good with the original blade.
