Hi there,
I had a terrible news today, the firm I'm working at as IT manager will declare bankruptcy next month:eek:. It is a UK based company, paid me well for 2 years. Soon I'll be unemployed but I guess it is normal for these days of global crisis. It may have a positive outcome for me though, I have a little time to make knives and there are orders piling up, this will force me up to making knives to earn a living....

Bankruptcy doesn't necessarily mean you are closing. The company I'm with went through two in the 7 years I have been here

Man I'm sure sorry to hear that. Quite a number of makers have gone full time successfully under similar circumstances, I and know you can do it too when you put your muscle behind it. Good luck, and Go For It! Get that lady to help you making sheaths! ;)

Thanks Dave, I guess I'm far from earning money from knife making but I'm definitely closing the gap, learning too much and spending at least 10 hours a day in the shop. I even forgot to eat some days, I realized that when a terrible head ache hit me. But in comparison I have much more chance then USA as in my country there is no good custom knifemaker, at least I dont know one, as a knife freak if I dont know even one name on knife making then my chances are high. I took my latest knives including the "republic knife" to work, at least 80 % of the employees in the firm are seriously interested and today 2 orders received from there (1 chefs knife, 1 lockback fisher folder - with serrated half-edge and fish net hook).

Hey, do you suggest I have to change girlfriend or what? :D

I don't recommend changing girl friends! But if she has good experience working leather, I bet she'll help you. Might take a little "convincing" though... :D

Good luck on making knives to earn a living. Also, sorry to hear the sad new on the job closing there. May your day become a blessed one. -----------------:)

Thanks friends, I know I will survive at this business as long as you are here. This forum is not just for sharing experience, it is mainly for moral support. Most of us would gain that info from somewhere (but harder I have to admit) if we seek it hard, but the energy keeping most of us going is not just the satisfaction of finishing a knife but to share it with others that we know they will appreciate the effort and feel for us.
These hard times doesn't hurt that much as long as I share it with you guys, I owe all of you greatly and someday I'll pay my debt I promise...
