I'm sure this is none of my business, and I'm just being nosy, but I always wonder why someone might have been banned from this forum. I notice that the posts from many of those who were banned seem pretty rational and/or interesting, but they must have done something somewhere along the way to run afoul of the rules.

Is there a way to find out why a person was banned from this forum? It may help others to know what types of "real world" activities are forbidden. I'm also curious how the banning process itself works- for example, what keeps a person from continuing to post even if they're banned. Can't they just sign up under a different name?

Maybe a mod could weigh in on this.

Search bg42edge or vorpalrain.

Read some posts from before he was banned. They are the same guy.

I can't add anything as to why folks have been banned... But, although most folks here can be friendly, knowledgeable, and accepting of others in general... I have run across a few that seem to like confrontation and can be very negative towards others. If some have been forced away for those reasons... Great! :)

Prime example right there.
Sometimes it's obvious while other times it's not, but the mods here are pretty forgiving and tolerant when need be

Btw I have been banned from a forum before I was new there and the mod didn't give me a chance to get a feel for things.
I had broken no rules but I guess the mod had just thought I would end up being trouble and I got banned within a week or so.
After that I went and joined a rival forum, where it was a rough start with a few clashing members but It's been a few years now of having gotten along well enough around there.

We have rules. You presumably read them when you signed up and got an account.

Violate those rules just a little and you’ll get corrected by mods. Violate them a lot, and you go bye-bye.

Yes, people who have been banned might have had something worthwhile to say at some point during their membership. Nobody is ALL bad. Generally though, if someone got banned, he had plenty of reason to know he was stepping over the line and continued doing it anyway.

Yes. If you have a paid membership you can see a list of the banned members and there is usually a comment attached explaining the ban. Majority of them are spammers that are insta-banned after being reported.

Generally if its a specific post, the mods will mark why they gave the infraction on that post. In cases where its a returning troll, or someone running multiple accounts, then the reason is not always there. At one time the mods maintained a running monthly banned list, but I don't think they do anymore... though if paid members can see that list generated by the new software, that would be why. I would say that if you are unsure as to why someone was banned, and it concerns you, such as you feel that perhaps you might be on the same path, I think reaching out to the mods via a PM or VM requesting a PM (unpaid members can't send but can receive I'm pretty sure) would be the thing to do. They are generally pretty happy to make sure things stay pleasant and I'm sure they would rather help someone fit in, rather than just throw them out.

It has been my experience that the Mods normally give someone plenty of warning before they get banned.

Thanks everyone for your very helpful responses. I'll make sure to toe the line for now and hereon out;)!

The only people I've seen banned involved screwing someone over in the exchange, like theft or scamming, or they outright attacked the mods in open threads. Telling a mod they suck at their job is a good way to get yourself in trouble.

Another I've seen is to have a thread shut down for going off the rails and then immediately opening another thread about the same topic. They're usually inflammatory types of threads with name calling and copious amounts general jackassery.

Following the rules is a good place to start and if that's not clear then ask a mod about the specific situation. As another generalization, if you have to ask a mod if it's okay to post, it's not okay to post.

Mods can see the original post. So now what you think of the mods is plain to us You did well to remove it. It was pretty insulting.

I dont think that of all the mods knarfeng, just the ones that it applied to, but I think thats evident to any mod who reads it. Any mod who was offended by the unprofessional moderation that I described probably should be. There are indeed good moderators here.

I've looked through banned ex-members and some of their descent into banning is pretty epic crazy stuff, while spammers are essentially auto banned. I would say for the most part decent folks make up a small minority of banned ex-members, who had a really bad day and posted before they thought it through. The majority (excluding spammers) went off the "good folks" reservation for a good long while before being ultimately banned.

Some of the stuff Mods have to deal with makes me cringe, but really glad they do, making BF more enjoyable.

I agree with the above post. If no one was monitoring this forum I can see a lot of threads filled with trolls and people just trying to piss others off because they are having a bad day. And that would take away from what I love so much about this forum; helping others decide about which knife to get next and getting help deciding which knife to get next:) Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but whether it is positive or negative if you don’t think it will be helpful than just don’t post. And like bikerector said if you have to ask than it probably isn’t appropriate for this forum.

Most of the time it's because they simply don't play well with others. Pick any reason or reasons. They can't accept other people's opinions, or they get chastised for breaking the rules and go on a vulgar rampage against the mods, or they keep breaking rules despite warnings, or they're just plain trolls. Racism and/or bigotry will instantly get you a boot in the ass. Mod sass can earn your a pretty swift kick too; all the mods here are volunteers who take time out of their lives to maintain order and a genial atmosphere, so directly insulting them results in a harsh punishment.

Sometimes bannable posts will be moved "offline" (to a moderator-only forum) so it won't be readily apparent why a member was banned. Sometimes it won't be evident when you search their last few posts because it was on-going behavior. Sometimes they're banned for a post made a few days previous and it took that long for action. Sometimes the bannable offense was through private communication rather than on the public forums.
