Is it just me or does the Manilla style latch seem more ingenius? With the bantagas style when your manipulating the bali the latch flings around causing damage. With the Manilla style though with the latch being on the safe handle. It really doesn't seem to cause that much damage. Is there a benefit to having the latch on the bite handle?

For me the manila is out of the way on the safe handle but it gets in the way of my manipulating. it always seems to snag my palm.

I prefer the batangas as well. The manila style latch just seems to get caught up on my hand while manipulating. Maybe it just takes time to get proficient with the manila style latch, I dont know. I dont have anything, that I concider expendable, in my collection to practice with.

Is Taylor Seto the only player out there that currently makes Manilla style Balisongs?

I prefer Batangas. There's quite a few moves where I hold the handle way in the back, and the lock gets in my way constantly on a Manila.Even when I'm holding further up,it still manages to catch on my palm.
Either style will still cause damage. It's really a matter of where the lock is at any given point when the handles are about to touch. This is one of the reasons for tightening the lock so that it actually takes a little pressure to get it past the corners of the lock fork.

Personally i like to flip a manila style bali, but the main problem with me is its my instinct to grab the safe handle and start flipping...not a good idea when i throw a manila into the collection. I "made" my jag manila style when i repinned it, but i always keep a wrap of tape around the whole thing, when i pick it up, try to make the latch handle go flying, it doesnt move, i think to myself "what the h*ll" and look down, see the tape, and it registers "oh yeah, wrong handle..."

Heh,a *lot* of people have that problem

That's one reason I learned how to play with either handle and still be safe from getting sliced & diced.

Without looking at the handle, or feeling for a latch. How do you recognize which handle is the safe handle? Please teach...

If you look in Chuck's Gallery Page, you will see a modified 42 that is now Latchless, the person in question simply filed very light lines on the safe handle.

Indexing, even if you do not practice Kali, Escrima or Arnis, indexing is very important as you are manipulating a sharp piece of steel that can be deceptive if you are not paying attention.

Just an idea.

Hmm...
If I'm handed a strange bali that I can't automatically tell is a Batangas or Manila, then I'll do one of a select few moves to open it,then look to see where the edge is.There are some moves that don't bring the blade into contact with any part of the skin,so they're absolutely safe to use.
Learn which moves are absolutely safe and use those when you're handed a strange bali. This will save you from getting sliced by it immediately.Once you see where the edge(s) are,you can adjust the knife in your hand.
