Ok so I want to start making knives but I really don't know where to start... I want to forge them, but would it be better if I start by using stock removal? And also what sort of equipment would I need just to start out...:D

You should start with stock removal since forging requires lots of skill and a anvil (anvils are near impossable to find if you want a good one for a fair price) to do stock removal you can use a hack saw files and sand paper but the work will be hard and time consuming but the slower you are forced to work the less likely to are to make mistakes. If you want to do serious work you will NEED a belt grinder these are roughly a grand for a great setup but you could buy a grizz they cost 275 right now but they are not on the same level as a burr king kmg ,hardcore or any hi end grinder. work with the files and you will have true fully handmade knives then get a grinder if you last though that

If you are going to forge you will still need a few basic items to get rid of the hamer marks and dress up your blade and handles etc.

So you basically need the stock removal tools for forging aswell.

I started with a couple of files sand paper and a 3 inch vice.

Look in the telephone book and find a local spring maker see if he will sell you some annealed flat spring steel. I went to the shop and
asked to buy a couple of off cuts and they gave me a couple of pieces.

I was started. ( you can always have some steel mail ordered fom net suppliers. The only one I have details for is www.oxarc.com the rep was kelly couples I had some 15n20 and some 1084 posted for making damascus)

I would recommend you make a handy small blade knife to get started.
If it goes wrong it is not a lot of effort. What you learn can make the next better. Show no fear what ever you make will be a knife and you will have made it.

All the flash gear comes later when you catch the same disease that keeps us in the shed all of our spare time.

I started with a single speed Wilton Square Wheel, a cheap drill press, and a buffer.. It was under $1000 at the time.. I made the knives for my first feature in TK with just that..
You dont need a whole lot to get started, could even get by with less.. Hope this helps ya..

I should have added the tools mean NOTHING they just make the job easyier its all up to the maker not the tools

I forgot to mention that I have access to a full metal shop...:p So I have all the tools except anvil and forge... So I guess I will just start stock removal and build up from there:)
