Does anyone have any experience with the lower priced damascus steel being sold by several knifemaking supply stores... the stuff that's sold only in 12" bars, starting at about $54 per bar? Could there be any problems with the layers coming apart if it's not as well made as the higer priced damascus made by Devin Thomas and others?

Thanks,

Ryan

Kind of curious myself as I plan on getting some. Don't want to spend the big bucks on the good stuff as I have never worked with damascus before. I have seen a couple offerings in the price range your talking about. One had no mention of where it was made or from what steels. The other was 512 layer Edwards high carbon damascus. The Edwards would be my choice. I think I have seen where alot of the cheap stuff is from Pakistan or some other place where you don't really know what your getting. You could also do a search on Damasteel to see what you come up with. I remember seeing a couple of ads in "Blade" where you could buy it for around the same price. As it is a powdered damascus, you would not have to worry about the welds coming apart.

Where did you hear about the Edwards damascus? I don't think I've seen that. I have seen Damasteel, but the price was about the same as Devin Thomas steel, at least at the place I looked.

I really like damascus but I don't want to use the high dollar stuff because at this point the finished knife would probably be worth less than the barstock I started from!

The Edwards stuff is listed in Sheffield's Knifemakers Supply catalog. It is a 5160/1018 composite. 1/8" x 1" x 8" is $38. I plan on ordering a piece to make a couple of small stag-handled stick tangs.

Wouldn't a steel made of 5160 and 1018 be a bit low on carbon?

Regarding the "lower priced Thunderforged(tm)Damascus" that some knifemaking supply houses are carrying, we (UAI) are the actual manufactures of it.

The quality is great, I have many satisfied clients. We just make it on a commerical level and are able to pass along great savings to the end user.

The metal content is 01, 1095 & 8% ni.

Check out our damascus page at http://www.knifesupplies.com/Damascus.html

Would it be any cheaper if we ordered it straight from you, RC?

Hello Oz:

The cost per billet is the same anywhere you go.

But any order with us that is $50.00 or greater gets free UPS ground shipping in the 48 states. Not too mention every order gets a nice free gift!

I hope this helps.

Guys,

I emailed RCC with a few questions. What is the average rockwell after heat treat? And who did he recommend for heat treat?

He said" he had been told the average is 57-59. Some have gotten even higher."
He recommended K&G and T.K.S for heat treaters.
Very quick with the answers! Nice guy.

Some thoughts. I use a good bit of Devin's Stainless Damascus. Since I use full tangs on my knives and am not enthusiastic about burying $22/inch damascus under a bolster and handle, I have Devin weld a stainless full tang onto a piece of Damascus that is the exact size of the blade I want. He charges $15 for this and also anneals and surface grinds the weld so it is easy to work with.

I have firends who have used their local welder to TIG weld on a tang with normal Damascus, and pretty much double the mileage they get out of each piece of Damascus they buy. One caution, unless the welder is also capable of annealing the blade, plan your blade so your drill holes will not be on the weld. You can only drill that weld and the immediately adjacent (~1/8") steel if it annealed or if you use carbide bits. Generally, planning is cheaper.

Whoever you get your Damascus from, make sure they stand behind their product and will replace anything with faulty welds. That doesn't really compensate you for the work you wasted, but it is better than eating the steel too. Also, make sure what you get is the size advertised. If they sell you 1/4" stock, make sure it is 1/4". You shouldn't have to pay for what they necessarily have to waste in surfacing the steel.

Generally Damascus steel is like fine wine. You may find a bargain, but you generally get what you pay for. That said, don't practice on the good stuff. Start with the Gallo then move up to the Chateau vintages.

Try it, you'll like it.
