Bargain for my kid...

I'm no expert on Stainless Steels, but the URL at http://www.gerberstore.com/index.php?xpage=itempage&xid=553 says Materials = 425HC steel Serrated blade, fiberglass-filled nylon handle.

Hope that helps. And my eldest is 7 years old, so does this mean I have to start saving for his first one?

Cheers
Phillip

Edit added: PS. The cost at GerberStore is $39.95 just for the knife, so it looks like you got a good bargain there.

The next size up (they make 3 this knife in 3 sizes) is 154CM or ATS34. I'm not sure which exactly, but they're similar anyway.

I have had a Covert for about ten years now. It is ATS-34. The Cabelas sight lists the Mini as ATS-34 but I doubt it is. I have beat the tar out of mine and it has held up very well, except for the serrations. Too much wire stripping. I think it will be a good knife for a kid because of the secondary lock that won't allow the liner lock to fail. My wife is a pediatric nurse and I work in an ER and am in school. If he cuts himself I am going to get it!

He might as well learn sometime or he'll grow up scared of them. It looks like you know what you're doing starting him off, though. I like the idea of starting him off with a knife like yours.

By 8, I was walking around with a pocket knife nobody taught me how to use. I just watched the grownups, and it was never a big deal or a mystery. Back in the 50s we were expected to be able to cut things for ourselves.

I will keep the knife with my others and teach him to use it with supervision only.

Just be sure he doesn't take it to school, after all it's "tactical-looking" and might make a school-marm wet herself

That looks like a nice knife. Not sure if that would have been my choice for the boy but it should work.

Nice to know that not every parent these days gives his kid items made exclusively of foam rubber.

Yeah, and he sounds like he wants to actually spend some time with the kid and teach him to use it responsibly. What a concept! :)

Yeah, if he took it to school the Dept. of Homeland Security would probably take him to Guantanemo. I will be keeping it in my room. I caught him trying to take some empty .40 S&W brass to school one day and had to have a talk with him. I still have my first knife, a small Parker lockback with a polished bone handle. The tip is broken off from throwing it in the ground. I never showed it to my dad.

If your dad is like mine, he probably knew all along, just rolled his eyes and thought "that'll learn him" :)

My daughter just turned 7 and bought herself a pink SAK Classic with her B-day money. Start 'em young, start 'em smart.:)

Hmmm dint know they made 'em in pink... I have a 7-yr-old girl too... an SAK might be just the thing to go with the pink cammies she wants...

I and the neighbor kids always had knives, but they did something with theirs that I refused to do with mine. They played a game called "Stretch." On each turn, you throw the knife into the ground as close to your right foot as you dare. Then, keeping your left foot planted, you stretch til your right foot is touching the knife, and then you retrieve it. When you can no longer stretch and get the knife, you're out.

Didn't they ever nail their feet to the turf? You freaking bet they did!

We didn't need any stinking IQ test to tell us who the less bright kids were. We had knives.

A great little combo for a kid! Great price, too. As is typical with Gerber knives, different sources list different steel types. Most say it's 154CM, while the Gerber Store mentioned above has it as 425HC, while still others use the meaningless "surgical" or "high carbon" nomenclature. Whatever it is, it should be a great knife for your son. I know many knife people seem to have either quality or ethical issues with the current Fiskars-owned Gerber (the great CRKT M-16/Gerber EVO copying scandal), but I have a slew of Gerbers and am very happy with them (Aspect, Tread, Air Ranger, Crusader, Gator folder in 154CM, red LTR, and EVO Jr., all in plain edge). They are all well assembled and solid, hold their edges quite well (considering most of them are lower end stainless), and have proven quite durable.
I also have the Gerber Infinity Ultra LED, and I'm perfectly happy with it. It's a decent little light. I like my Inova X-1 a bit better, but the Gerber gets used more often due to its pocket clip.
Kudos, by the way, for wanting to teach the little guy how to use/respect knives at an early age. Right on!

Are you kidding? These days it doesn't have to be tactical looking to cause problems. There have been kids expelled from schools for bringing a butter knife in with their lunchbox. http://www.zerointelligence.net/archives/000442.php

Plastic butter knives have caused expulsions/suspensions, even when the plastic butter knife in question was supplied by the SCHOOL CAFETERIA.
http://www.channelcincinnati.com/education/2027051/detail.html

There was a kid recently who realized that he had accidentally worn the worn pants into school, while ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL, and had immediately on arrival to school gone to the office and asked to have it held for him, explaining the situation. Result: Expulsion. (the offfice is on school property, therefore he violated zero-tolerance for weapons, therefore expulsion). The knife? A swiss army knife.

Things are freaking crazy these days.

Thanks for the tip on the combo set though, that looks pretty good. I just picked up one. Coupon: TCKFSLBP is 10% off purchase (expires today 7/22), which almost negates the shipping cost. 4.4% cash back via fatwallet.com also.
