Bark River 3V Microbevels

Wow, my Bravo Necker 2 (3V) was finally getting dull, so I decided to strop. After a bit of examination, I finally figured something out- it seemed like I was taking an extremely steep angle on the strop to get somewhat of an edge.

That's when I watched one of virtuovice's videos and did some close eyeballing finally, and noticed I had a pretty good micro-bevel on this. No wonder this was a pain in the ass to sharpen! Currently in the process of taking off micro-bevel now, and it is actually fairly easy to sharpen once it is out of the way.

I haven't experienced this with my A2 steel BR's, so I guess this micro-beveling is somehow intentional for their 3V. It seems like they are doing their customers a disservice by leaving this on though, considering how much they tout the benefits of zero-degree convex grinds.

I still have a bunch of their products, and I will probably buy more, but I will probably stick to the A2 I am familiar with.

Just an update for anybody interested- after taking off the micro-bevel with a coarse DMT hone, I just stropped at a low angle with black and green compounds, and got an extremely sharp (much sharper than came from the factory) edge on it. I am very satisfied with the cutting performance now compared to when I got it. Say 5-6/10 originally, and 8.5-9/10 now. Will be using more extensively now.

So watch out for those microbevels everyone!

I have one of the first run Bravo Necker 2s in Sandvik steel 13c27 IIRC and it came with a slight microbevel on one side - obviously a finishing blem. Is my only Bark River and one of my favorite EDU knives. I didn't know they had made another run....

This is in 3V. I have a reg. Bravo Necker 1 in 12c27 that is sweet, no issues, and a handy little knife too, but now that I fixed this, my Necker 2 is really going to see more use, because I like the length of it much better for my tasks than the smaller Necker.

Its a perfect size, I picked up some G10 grips for it and made my own leather lined Kydex sheath. Am currently giving it a temporary rest in rotation for a BK24, but is probably my most commonly carried fixed blade.

Well, I just wanted to add to my previous observations- just got in a BRKT Little Carver 3V- same thing - microbevel on it- barely cut paper from the factory, shit at taking an edge again on a strop- after 15 minutes or so reprofiling to a real zero degree convex - it actually rocks. Easy to sharpen, and edge comes up quick with stropping only.

I just will be resigned to re-working all my 3V BRKT to a zero-degree convex, and be happy about it, because once they are there, they perform admirably, but perform like junk shit with a microbevel on it.

Also, going camping in western MD this weekend, so I will post up a review of the lil' Carver afterwards if people are interested.
