Bark River Aurora or Spyderco Bushcraft

bushcraft, because I like 0-1 and scandi edges. Don't discount the nebula though.

No one really has the Spyderco yet. I think this question cannot really be answered properly.

I have owned an Aurora and love Bark River products - and will have a Spyderco by the end of the week. I will let you know.

I like the looks of the Bushcraft. Didn't get to handle the prototype at SHOT last year like I had been hoping, though--Sal had accidentally left it in his hotel room! :p

Do you have one yet Pit?

I can't afford one of those !:( It does look a great knife though and the handle looks like it would be far more hand filling than the Barkie.

To be honest I have actually lost my interest in the whole Scandi Bushcraft phase. I prefer a nice convexed edge, it just seems a little more robust and easier to maintain. I admit that Scandi's do seem a little better on wood but the difference is very slight !
I'm hoping for a return to the more robust survival blades now !!!:D:thumbup:

Both look like good knives it would really come down to whether you prefer the Scandi (Spyderco) or Convex (BRKT) grind.
I really love the look of the Aurora but i just can't warm up to the convex grind, prefer the scandi grind and the flat grind.
I'd probably even take a hollow ground over the convex.
I only have 2 convex knives a BRKT Micro-Canadian and an old Blackjack Ananconda II.
I hardly ever use those two, prefer my Rat Izula, Moras and my Enzo in 01.
My "grail" bushcraft knife would be Brian Andrews scandi ground knife.
Of course thats just my opinion i know some much more knowledgeable people here swear by the convex, hey whatever floats your boat!
:)

I lean towards the robust edge of the Convex grind, I like my Aurora, that's not to say that the other edges are in any way inferior to my thinking and for many jobs they are actually better.

Depends what you want to do. The Aurora should batton cut/split a little better than the Spyderco because of its smoother grind, not sure about slicing since the total stock is thicker, but wouldn't want to bet money one way or the other. The Aurora would be a better hunting knife since the narrow handle makes for a good pinch grip for flencing and fine skinning work or cutting meat. The Spyderco on the other hand would be much better if you had to prepare a pile of feather sticks for fire lighting.

I like flat/convex grinds, but generally I like them to be on thinner stock, or deeper bladed, than the Aurora. I also like slightly fatter handles, I have used thin ones and found that if you have to work wood for any extended period you can get sore. I never noticed that when I was using the thinner handled knives for game prep and odd jobs, only when I started carving bow drill hearths, spoons, netting needles, and lots of feather sticks did I find a problem. Horses for courses ;)

Oh yeah, the Aurora is half an inch longer on the blade and about 1/4" longer on the handle.

I've handled the Bushcraft (at Blade) and it's nice- but way too much $$$ for what you're getting, IMHO. I like my Koster better. Personally, out of the two choices given in the OP, I'd go with the Aurora. I think the Aurora is a little bit bigger, though. Spyderco makes killer folders, but I don't think they can beat Bark River at their own game.

There's no doubt that the Spyderco will become a sought-after collectible. I'm sure they'll end up selling a truckload of those things.

I think id go for the barkie myself. That being said, I have really been enjoying a good scandie grind that is on my mora:P

^This.

I'd go Aurora from what I've seen. The Spydie is too rich for my blood. If I wanted something other than a Barkie, I'd jump over to BritishBlades and see what they have to offer.

I have never handled either knife, but I think I'd go withthe spyderco, primarily because of the grind. I would, of course, have to find a welder or somthing that could fill in that weird little hole.

You need to check prices - they are about the same - if not the barkie being more.

I just picked up my Spyderco for 160 shipped.
