I just purchased a Bark River Mountain Man and was curious as to the best method to sharpening a convex grind? Will a Sharpmaker handle the job? What angle should I use? Any words of of advice for a newbie?

A sharpmaker isn't going to do a good job sharpening a convex grind. Take a look at these videos. They explain convex sharpening pretty well.

Convex sharpening can be done with sandpaper over a soft backing or on a slack belt on a belt sander. One of the most common problems people have when first convexing is using too much pressure and rounding over the edge. Try searching this section for convex sharpening also. There are numerous threads discussing this topic. If you have any specific questions be sure to ask.

The Sharpmaker will work, but the edge won't be convex anymore. There will be a tiny secondary bevel. The grind will not change, just the very edge. I modified my CRKT Hissatsu to a full convex grind and touch it up on the Sharpmaker. If you dont want the secondary bevel, see the above advise.

Good advice here. A Sharpmaker will make the knife sharp, but will not maintain the convex nature of the BRKT edge geometry. The Sharpmaker would not change the primary blade grind. I have 3 Barkie's and I have been using the method outlined by the videos on knivesshipfree.com with good success. It takes me longer than just using the Sharpmaker, but it is fun to experience a different sharpening method and the way the produced edge works. I do find that my technique with that sharpening method I loose the BRKT logo. Not a big deal to me.

Excellent videos and something new to learn. What's not to like about knives always keeping the mind expanding.

Looking to rent a bark blower for a couple of jobs I have lined up here, but cant seem to find one in my area. Any guys from SE WI know of any locations that rent them out, or would be willing to rent one?
