I was checking out the bark River Gollock on the internet. I was thinking that it would be a great knife to modify into a clipped Bowie type point. On one site it said the blade thickness was .274" and total weight 24 oz. on another site it stated that the blade thickness was .210 ' and total weight 16oz. Does anybody know if there are (or were) two different versions of this knife or if it was a typo. Thanks.

The first production run, a couple years ago, was a bit thinner than the current run, and are made from different carbon steels. Both are awesome bush knives!

Personally, I would not want the mod you're thinking of on my Golok - the blunt end absorbs all the hits that go into the ground, etc, when you're clearing brush. I've heard it also works well for peeling bark - something I've not tried.

BUT if you do decide you want the mod, I seriously suggest you call BRKT and talk to Mike - He'll do the mod for you, and it will be done well.

I enjoy modifing knives myself. But I see the Golok becomes wider towards the tip. A Bowie clip would ruin that effect. I think a spear point would be really cool and go well with the "primitive" look of this blade. I feel I need a point because you never know when you might get jumped by a jaguar. Or worse by a two-legged mammal! Thanks for the input.

The Golok can be had with a sharpened tip for those times you might want to reach out and touch someone.

In all of the online shops I have not seen any mention of whether the tip is sharpened or whether it can be ordered with the tip sharpened. What is that, a special order item?

Take a look at the Blackjack Panga if you want something with the slimness and length of Bark River Golok but with a very pointy tip.

I've seen one or two on line. They usually had a black sheath instead of the brown sheath. If they're all gone, you can probably either request it by email from the vendor or send it in to Mike Stewart at Bark River and have it done. Try knivesshipfree.com

I just noticed that you're in Brazil - calling Mike might be a bit prohibitive cost-wise!

I strongly encourage you to go to Knifeforums.com, and find the Bark River forum there. That will allow you to PT (that forum's personal message) Mike - he is on that forum constantly! Be sure you mention your jaguar situation!

You'll probably have to work with a BRKT dealer, since Mike doesn't sell direct to the public - I recommend Derrick at knivesshipfree.com. He'll do all he can to accomodate you.

Re sharpened tip: Mike will sharpen the tip edge, if you want. I had that done the first time around, but came to the conclusion that, for me, it was worthless - it certainly wouldn't work for stabbing jaguars! :D

Because the Golok is over an inch longer and it gets wider towards the tip. I guess the best thing would to buy one as is and even better if I can getone with a sharpened tip. Probably would work perfectly here in the boondocks..

The BdN is a slicer, that's sorta okay as a chopper. The Golok is a chopper, heavier than the BdN, much more efficient for all around hacking.
