A buddy is asking me about the BRK&T Golok, and wants to get one. I thought I'd check them out on the forums, but cannot seem to find that much about them

Any experience with them, and maybe how they compare with other similar sized knives?

Thanks for your help....

I think they have MUCH to thin handles. Decent blade. The handle is much like one would use for a 3" hunter.

I have now used one for close to a combined two hours -- batoning rounds and cutting brambles and small (< 1") trees.

The handle (micarta on mine) is fine FOR ME. It is always about how a tool works for you.

The edge has held up fine - just stropped it a couple of times on some 1200 grit sandpaper.

Horse, if you feel the handles are too thin, drop Mike at BRK&T an e-mail, I'm sure he'll work with you to get a handle that you like. He's a very helpful fellow.

I have used what I think is called "cohesive bandage" from the local feed shop to wrap my machete handles that were too small. Its like a bandage that you wrap around a horses leg. Its sticky enough to stay on and it absorbs sweat. Its kind of like pre-wrap that you use under ankle taping, etc., but its heavier duty.

Definately not a full solution. But its easy to put on and take off.

Often grips are not given the same attention as the blade, the Valiant Golok's have nice working grips. I had problems with the blades on four out of the four I have used, though two were protoypes of a different hardening scheme. Others have reported better success. Pretty much optimal wood working profile for a large blade.

The Bark river is nice, but I have 2 Valiants that are DEEELITES! They are comfortable and effective- not that a BRKT would not work, but I do not need one now.

There's a supplier here stateside now. I believe he has an EBay store, and he is a contributor at the Himalayan Imports forum.

Who posted that he was having supply problems IIRC.

If he is who I think you are referring to, his posts were always good. He seemed like a nice guy. He posted about the family problems and supply issues.

Unfortunately, he was banned. If it is who I'm thinking of.
