Bark River Golok

No experience yet... but I do plan on getting one in the next production round. I am fairly certain they will be 5160 this time.

I have considerable experience with the Bark River Golok.

My initial thought was that it was smaller than it should be, However, it is actually a powerhouse of a cutter. I now consider it "just right"!

It is excellent at clearing brush, etc. A drawing stroke is what you want there.

It is good at chopping, although a full sized axe will certainly do better at heavy chopping. Ounce for ounce, though, it definitely outworks a hatchet.

It batons incredibly well, splitting wood with ease - or "like butter", as a freind says.

The edge stays sharp enough through quite a bit, and comes back easily with stropping.

The BRKT Golok is on my permanent "bring" list for camping tools, and is lashed onto my pack if there's even a hint that I'll be making a campfire on a backpack trip.

It is also great at spreading peanut butter and jam on large pieces of bread! :D

Ya, I really like the size, and the great cutting power it has. I've not really durability tested it, but in routine chopping it cuts great and takes a great edge. It's become my fave big knife too, always comes camping.

I have one. Or, I should say that I "used" to have one, before my wife stole it from me.

This is still a sore point.. :p

The BR golok is a very good tool. I've used it for light limbing, fence line clearing, vine chopping and draw-knifing. My wife has used it for carpet cutting, paint scraping, prying and hammering...

She also puts it away wet. :grumpy:

So far though, it has proven to be indestructable. I do think I will have to send it back to Mike to be prettied up again, though. :o

thanks guys ,I just ordered one with orange handles to match my Bravo-1.
cant wait to start using it........

Did you check with the guy to be sure he actually has one in stock?

These haven't been made in quite awhile, and a number of non-stocking dealers advertise them, even though there are none available.

Several guys have had their money tied up in non-existant knife orders for months because of this situation.

Hope you're not one of them!

Mike will be making a new batch of Goloks later this year. Until those are made, the only way to get one that I know of is a sale by a private owner.

Yes, I had one. It was a very fine cutting tool and well made also. Grinds were on the money for a convex edge and the micarta handle was ergonomic - not a blister maker. The sheath wasn't much to talk about. Balance was nice and the knife felt good to swing.

I found myself prefering the Valiant type golok over the Bark River, but that is probably a matter of personal taste.

I like the Golok, pretty handy.

I bought my Orange Golok from bladematrix last year, he only had 1 other black handle left in stock.
At that time I could find no other place that had them in stock, even tho' quite a few still listed them on their websites.
I emailed and called around before placing my order.

I asked Mike Stewart about the A2 steel some sites had listed and he told me,

All Goloks are 0170-6.
None were ever made in A-2.

Their supposed to make some more soon.
1095 would be nice :)

I've been having a lot of problems getting a Woodland in green linen with solid pins.Still waiting for a Nebula too(but fear it's been stolen)

Wonder why BRKT can't or won't sell direct on-line? Save a lot of worry.

BRKT is semi-production. They make a batch of one model at a time. They also make knives/work on knives for other big name companies.
If they put up one model of knife on their website, it would take them months to sell it, and they wouldn't have the money to fund the next project. By selling to big distributors, who in turn, sell to the online/brick and mortar places, they can get money upfront.

The best places to buy BRKT knives are:

KnivesShipFree

DLT Trading Company

McKnight Cutlery

Sage Creek Outfitters

These guys are in direct contact with BRKT, and always have any knives they show.

Most of the knives BRKT make sell within the first couple days they hit the shelves. On the other hand, if you watch the BRKT forum onthe "other forum", you can see when something is coming out, and make an early order with one of the above dealers.

It's a small operation, folks. They just don't work like Benchmade or Buck knives!

I just got one w/ orange handles in a trade. It will match my orange handle Bravo1.
Gotta love them barks..........
Ill post pics as soon as the Bravo comes back from David Brown w/ its new kydex pants.....

Congrats! Those are a couple of great knives! I'm sure you'll enjoy using them for many years!

Pity about the blaze orange handles though......... :D
