Anyone have a BRK&T Kephart or Mini Kephart? I've search some, but I can't really find out anything about them. The blade shape reminds me of a SAK blade, which seems to be the ultimate in utility.

look in bark rivers forum on knife forums. I have one and its great

You can also check here or here.

Note that the blade used on the Kephart is the same as the one used on the "Sperati Point", and the blade on the Mini-Kephart is the same as the one on the "Journeyman".

I have both the Kephart and the Journeyman, and both are very good, useful knives. I'll stick to the Kephart here.

Very nice sized blade, a simple spear-point, obvious connection to the old Green River blade, and a host of other spear points. It's exactly as you describe it - like the SAK blade, it's very versatile, a very funcitonal blade. It's made from Sandvik 12C27, with Mike's own heat treatment, which gives it the ability to take a wicked sharp edge, and hold it much better than you'd expect for 12C27.

About the only thing I wouldn't recommend it for is as a dedicated hunting blade - not that it couldn't take apart and skin your deer or elk, there's just a lot of knives that would do it better.

Thanks, grampa, for your comments (you were also helpful back when I was shopping for my Mini Canadian). I don't need the knife for hunting, just other camping tasks for which my Mini C has seemed a bit small. I am also considering the Highland Special, which is easier on my wallet.

Okay, in that case, you might want to look real closely at the black micarta Kephart that Derrick has at KnivesShipFree -

The micarta handled Kepharts have a nice swell towards the back of the handle that works real nicely. The wood handled one don't seem to have this - difference in the handle blanks, I imagine.

The Kephart would be a great camping knife! Pretty much ideal!

One more thing -

You might also want to look at the Canadian Special. It's about the best general purpose or field knife I've seen.

The Canadian Special reminds me of the Grohmann #1. I liked the shape of the Grohmann I used to have, but I could never get it sharp (stainless sabre grind).

I'll add it to the list of contenders. Why do you steer me away from the Highland?

Sorry - neither steering your towards nor away from the Highland. I don't have one, so I can't make comments from experience.

I do have the Fox River, which is just a tad larger. It is an excellent hunting knife, and a good camping knife. To the degree that they resemble each other, I'd say they (or the Highland specifically) make better hunting knives than camping knives. After all, it's what they were designed for!

I think either the Canadian Special or the Kephart would be better for a primary camping knife.

I think the ulimate triple threat would be your Mini-Canadian for taking game apart and other smallish chores, a Canadian Special for general work, and a Golok for chopping, batoning, clearing, etc.

My son has a Highland that he uses as his camp knife, and I use a North Star. Either one works well as a general purpose knife, and the Highland is a good hunting design, too.

My Canadian Special should be here in a couple days, we'll see how well it does. I like the design of the Kephart, and if Mike offered it in A2 I would have one.

Hey Foilist,

If you go here and, on the right hand pane, click on "Current Production", every knife they make is listed with complete specs. In the specsheet, you can click on each knife to see the image and scale offerings. They don;t sell knives there, but it's a good site for research.

Yup, I spend more time than I should there . . .

I didn't realize that the Kephart wasn't A2.
