I just got my AG Russell catalog, and I have been looking at the Bark River knives Mike Stewart is putting out.

Has anybody had any experience with them?

Are they convex ground?

What about the heat treat, are they performing well?

Thanks.

I managed to pick up a Highland Special two or three months back, and absolutely love it. It's getting carried more and more now that I've made a sheath that I like a little better than the factory one. a very practical "do everything" fixed blade that carries particularly well.

It is convex ground, and very, very sharp from the factory.

There are only two- minor idiosyncracies that don't suit me well. One was the sheath. It's pretty well made, but it's a little bulky and covers about 90 percent of the knife, and carries VERY low. Certainly not bad if it's use were restricted to field use only. So for awhile a lanyard was necessary just for drawing it reasonably efficiently. Second issue was that the point isn't very...pointy. Which once again would be great for cleaning game, but for regular use I like a sharper point.

All in all fairly small complaints for the bargain they represent.

No, I didn't catch that thread. I guess I should have used the search function.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have got a Woodland Special and am very pleased. Takes abuse very well and the A2 convex grind is easy to sharpen. As stated previously, the sheath is OK. I got the stag handle which is great for appearance, but no lanyard hole like the Micarta handles.

I have the special Montana Guide version from A.G. Russell. Blade length is just under 5 inches and the Micarta handle is a joy to hold. Overall, I love this knife. The convex grind and great handle shape make it a great user for most any chore around the kitchen, camp, or hunting field, with the exception of chopping of course. Yes, it came very sharp, but most importantly it is easy to make scary sharp again when the occasion arises. I really like A2.

Mike Stewart has a forum over at Knifeforums. You may want to try there for some answers. :D

I have the Woodland in Green Micarta. Came sharp as a razor. Great little knife. A new "North Star" model is in the works.

Bark River has some great patterns, that are meant to be used hard. They seem to be rapidly overtaking most of the spots on my current wishlist... :D

I have a Gameskeeper with green micarta handles, and this is a great knife. It's a very stout, very sharp knife. Nice balance, good overall ergonomics, although I think the end of the handle could stand to have the edges sanded, and could maybe be a bit slimmer. The A2 blades are great, this is becoming my favorite steel. Holds an edge well, and the convex blade sharpens up with stropping. It gets so sharp that, despite the fairly thick blade on this model, I was able to fillet blue-gills with mine.

I don't have any with the Sandvic stainless, but I have heard that it's pretty good, too.

Sheath could be improved, but I think they are working on improving them. Great customer service, too! They have more models than their web-site shows, but the listed dealers usually have the most recent models they offer.

A great Bark River dealer is Treemanknives. The guy is as classy as Mike at Bark River himself. Good prices too.

I've been waiting for BRKT to hit this forum  .

They are great knives . I've already ordered 2 Highlands (not at the same time). The 1st one my brother liked , had to have , so I gave it to him and ordered another :D .

Just ordered my 1st BRK&T yesterday. Been reading some good stuff about them and wanted to see for myself.:)
