Bark River Liten Bror, Northstar, or Mini Northstar, Little Carver?

I recently purchase a Bark River Bravo 1 in 3V, and Im impressed with this knife to say the least. I can't wait to put it to good use.

I'm now looking for another Bark River knife. I hear that this happens with most who buy 1 of their knives, you end up buying more. I've accepted this fact, as I'll be buying a Aurora soon enough. I'm looking for a smaller knife of good quality and the Liten Bror is my first choice, but no one has them in stock, and it will be a long while before Mike Stewart and Company start making them. So, I'm considering the Northstar, or the Mini Northstar or the Little Carver.

The Northstar may not be my first choice here. It comes in 3V, and there is a version of the knife without the "loop" attached to the end of the handle. There is only one thing that may keep me from buying this knife. The grip design looks different enough for me to potentialy not like it. I wish I could handle these knives!

I'm almost thinking the Little Carver may be too small, other than the size I like what I see.

The Mini Nortstar looks to be about perfect except for the steel (12C27). I don't know anything about it, but I think it should perform just fine for this knife's intended role for me.

I'm looking for a knife to carry almost every day that's tough enough to take some hard use as a "backup" survival type knife if the need would come up. Mostly is would be carried a lot, used a little for common knife uses, but would be there if I didn't have my "hard use" knives with me. This knife could sit in the car a lot, as I carry quality production folders for a EDC knife. The knife in mind would have to step up to the plate if hard use applications where to be thrown at it, and that's what's keeping me from pulling the trigger with the Mini Northstar. I just don't know enough about the 12c27 steel. I've done some research, but though I'd ck here to see if anyone has put it through it paces. Maybe you guys might have other suggestions or could talk me into the regular Northstar because the grip may be better than I think? Maybe the little carver will do the job?

Thanks for any and all input.

Keep in mind 12C27 has been in use for a long time. Stainless Moras use it. Kershaw has had a lot of success with it, and with other Sandvik steels. Supersteels make sense for specific hard-use purposes. 12C27 is a great mid-range steel that's been around long enough most companies know how to heat-treat it well.

The Northstar is nice. I had one without the loop and really liked it. BUT, it is a bit too woodcraft-centric for me, as I prefer to carry general use knives (like the Bravo 1). I also had a Liten Bror and think you'd be happy with one - it's a great all-around knife and in my opinion would handle hunting and fishing tasks better than the Northstar due to the integral guard area (again, like the Bravo 1).

Another thing to consider, if you want a spearpoint BRK, is the Aurora.

Don't forget the Mini-Canadian if you're looking at the lil carver. I bought one recently in 3v, and am quite pleased with it.

Take a look at the North Star Companion in A-2 if you think you might like the Mini-Northstar. I carry mine in the KSF Allegheny pocket sheath. It's a tough little knife.

I have two of them, a "Custom" Northstar in 3V and the Mini-Nothstar. IMO, the "Mini" is more of a Gentleman's EDC, a thin "slicer", that could be pressed into temporary hard service in a jam. The 12c27 is razor sharp and came so right from the factory. All I've done is touch it up with the strops. Having said that, I believe I saw where BRK is coming out with a "Mini-Norhtstar" with A2 or maybe 3V when they finally get caught up with the current production schedule.

I don't really care for the regular Northstar/Fox River style tapered handles so, I opted for the "custom" version Northstar with 3V(knivesshipfree still has them) with a different style handle with a palm swell and the square oversized lanyard loop ground off.

From top to bottom, Bravo 1 (for reference) , Custom Northstar, Mini-Northstar.

Thanks Harpoon1, I think I'm going to order one of those custom Northstars. I do wish I could buy a new Liten Bror though. Your picture of the grips helped me tremendously.

Your welcome. And it sounds like your probably already "on top of this" but, the Aurora w/3V is coming out soon too.

Thanks,

I actually ordered the Custom Northstar in 3V today. My schedule looks something like this:

Bravo 1 3V - Completed
Custom Northstar - Pending Delivery
Small/Medium EDCish Bark River - As soon as I can make up my mind
Liten Bror - As soon as they're available
Aurora 3V - When available pending funds

I'm sure I won't be done then either....

I've got all the BR's in 3V, and am waiting for the Aurora, which was supposed to come out this fall in 3V, but must have been delayed. The NS has a lot of distal taper, I'm not sure if I'd use it for hard use, but it's a great design. 12C27 is a very good steel, if you like the knife, I wouldn't hesitate to get one in that steel. 3V is one of my favorite steels, and I like the BR designs. The Liten Bror is a very stout knife, you'll like it if it ever comes available again!

The Liten Bror will be available again. I call Bark River yesterday and actually found myself speaking with Mike Stewart, and he assured me that the Liten Bror is planned for production around Febraury. He's a really nice person, and even though our conversation was a short one, I could conclude that Mike Stewart is a Genuine individual that appreciated speaking with a common retail customer. I learned a lot about Bark River Knife and Tool, and Mike from the brief 10 minute conversation.

The good news is that the Liten Bror will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

Aurora owner here. I never go into the woods w/o it. The handle is great. The custom Northstar w/ the palm swell is a great choice (I think). I'd also check out the upcoming DLT Bushcrafter that BRKT is about to ship. I like the look of it, it's a drop point bushcrafter. I agree w/ your reservations on the mini-northstar, have you checked out the 'northstar companion'? It's a small EDC NS in A2.

I might have to try the Aurora in A2 as well as 3V. I don't have any knives in A2 except for a mini (micro?) canadian. I've heard enough people speak highly of the Aurora that it sounds like a great all-rounder.

The fact that the grip of the cutom Northstar is more like the grip of the Bravo 1 is one of the reasons I ordered it. That and the 3V. I like A2 well enough, I have a Hogue EX-F01 in A2, so the Northstar Companion was, and still is a consideration. I didn't want to mis out on the Custom Northstar though. I'll have to look into the DLT Bushcrafter.
