bark river mini skinner..........????

I know Stretch has a couple of mini skinners.....Stretch, are you out there?

Once StretchNM spots this thread, he'll give you an earfull (eye full?). He has at least a half dozen Bark Rivers, including multiple Mini Skinners, as I recall.

You cannot go wrong with any Bark River. They are all excellent; it's simply a matter of choosing a size, shape, and handle material. I have a Mini Canadian and a Northstar, which are outstanding.

Thanks for the call fellows! I heard you from work 70 miles away! ((( :D )))

Just today (hand raised in testament in front of God), a co-worker was admiring the mini-Skinner I'm wearing. He's wanted one just like it since he first saw it many months ago...but now, he's thinking it'll be for his wife (they're both avid hunters and outdoors[men]). We went to DLTtradingcompany.com and knivesshipfree.com and he found a birdseye maple that he likes. I suspect he'll order it before this weekend.

To answer your question, Combatready, I really like mine. I wear it more often than any other BRKT I own. It's small but not too small, and the small blade lets me get it *very* sharp. In fact, the only Barkie I have that's sharper is the mini-Canadian that Foilist sold to me, but it belongs to my daughter.

I have medium-large hands but the smallish handle fits just fine. I don;t have a problem with the contoured handle...and it's nice and broad. The steel is thick and the profile is that of a skinner....nice smooth belly leading to the tip. 12C27 stainless steel...easy to sharpen and holds the edge very well, as far as a novice like me could tell. Sharpening a convex edge (IF you don;t already know this) is easy and cheap as far as sharpening supplies go.

I have two: one in black canvas Micarta and one in Oregon myrtle burl. I just know I'll have another mini-Skinner before I'm done buying BRKTs....I am confident in that. Here's a pic of the myrtle:

here's one of the micarta:

Like Foilist said, the mini-Canadian and Northstar also are great knives. I know IUKE12 has one too (northstar). I can't give enough praise to those knives......just can;t do it....and I can;t stop buying them! :D

StretchNM,
Have the Oregon myrtle burl scales darkened since you have had the knife?

All the Bark Rivers come with sheaths. The older ones had rather mediocre sheaths, but the newer ones come with pretty good sheaths that they make in house now (I think).

Hey Ramm, I'd have answered sooner but I lost track of this thread.

No. The scales have not darkened. The knife is handled and used often. THe finish is very tough - I'm guessing it's a varnish or poly. Now, it hasn;t been laying around in the sun or other bright places, but even so, unlike padauk and some other woods, I don;t think myrtle is suceptible to ultraviolet or oxygen related color changes. THe scales look the same as the day I bought it.... as far as I can tell. I'm a woodworker and have been for about 30 years, so I'd probably be able to tell if the color changed noticeably.

I'll try to get a pic or three of the knife in-hand, but no guarantees because wrestling the camera from my daughter is a chore!
