Bark River Mountain Man question.

I like the look of the Bark River Mountain Man. However, the first batch or two made used 1095 blades made by another company, which were re-ground and heat treated by Bark River. I couldn't see paying the price when I could buy the original blade for a fraction of the cost of the Bark River Model. I'm not saying the new grind and heat treatment didn't make the finished product better than the original, I just wasn't willing to pay the price difference.

Now I notice the new ones say their made out of 52100. Really? And is it a thicker blade than the original 1095 batch, which was just a tad too thin for my taste?

If it's the 52100 steel and a little bit stouter blade, I'll probably get one.
 
Big Mike from the WSS forum here at BF seems to have a direct line to Mike Stewart's (BRKT) desk phone. Maybe he'll chime in on this? I have some smaller BRKT's in 52100 and like them. I was'nt aware of the history of this particular model so this will be interesting to read.
 
I really like 52100, and have several Marble's out of this steel, and a couple of John Grecos. I think I only have one Barkie in 52100 -- the Lil' Boone. Most of my Barkies are A-2. Except for the ELK (side note: I won the contest for naming the E.L.K., and got a free one) I have never bought one of the 12C27 knives, for no good reason other than an irrational predjudice on my part against the steel.
 
I have a few of the knives in 12c27 and enjoy the performance I get out of them edgewise. I think it's usability is along the lines of 154cm and O1 knives I have.
 
I've heard good things about it. I really should try one sometime . . . hey, wait, I'm trying to get rid of knives, not add more. Dammit.

The ELK is 440C.
 
I stand corrected. I remembered it was the first stainless blade from BRKT, but was thinking it was the 12C27. I went back and found the original posts about it on the BRKT site. I must be killing off too many brain cells. Thanks.

I've got an ELK and it is a fine blade! It works wonderfully for its size!
I just need a different carry option for it. I'm considering a pocket sheath setup.

Get the Mountain Man and give us a review!

I can not help but everytime I look at the Mountain Man Knife, I see my grandmother carving slices off a BIG smoked ham with the knife she did just about everything in the kitchen with!
 
Okay, I ordered one, with the antique stag handle. Nice looking knife. However, I did notice this model has a thinner blade than most of my barkies -- it's made more for slicing than chopping. Looking at it, it couldn't help but think that: (a) with a thicker blade it'd make one heck of a camp knife, and (2) and wonder why the Lil' Nessy, another design obviously made for skinning and slicing, doesn't have a thinner blade.
 
I have several Bark Rivers in 52-100 steel and not only do they take a wicked...I mean screaming wicked...edge, they hold it and are very tough. Pretty awesome heat treat done to them. I cannot believe I do not have a MM yet. I have a couple Lil Boone's though that share a similar geometry to the MM's. They are impressive slicers and moderate duty knives.
