Bark River question

There IS another knife forum that does have a Bark River section.

I have no experience with that knife in question. Barkies are awesome.

Obviously you would get a biased answer if you go to the home page of a particular knife company! So why wouldn't you ask in a non biased arena? That being said Bark Rivers rock, and I have no experience with the golok, except it's not what I'd call a knife, it's more of a larger machete/ small sword!

There are no new Goloks currently available, no matter what you may see on some non-stocking knife dealer's sites. It's a fantastic blade which is in my pack any time I'm in the woods.

Expect a new production run of Goloks before Christmas.

The "other forum" has a Bark River page, and the owner of BRKT, Mike Stewart, is on there daily.

I have never had a Golok so can't comment on them. I have owned and used four Bark River knives with mixed experiences.

The first of these was a Mikro Slither - it is a very small knife and for some purposes would make a viable alternative to a folder. It was too small for me and I just couldn't get a decent grip on it. Quality was good and the steel took and held a great edge.

The second was the Blackwater boot knife. I like this knife. I do wish the grip was a half inch longer but otherwise no complaints except the finish is a bit rough in places.

The third was a Highland Special. This one was in A2 steel and takes and holds a serious edge. I just couldn't get on with the ergonomics of the knife. It never sat right in the hand and the blade was too thick for the size of the knife. Got rid of it.

The fourth is a Fox River. This is a good heavy duty knife in A2. No real issues with it - a good all round bush knife if you want something rugged and sharp.

Bark Rivers are very nice knives. The biggest problem I have with them is choosing between so many useful designs and tons of handle materials available.

I have a golok and have beaten it to hellandgone. I made the mistake of giving it to my wife and she came up with some uses for it I hadn't yet nightmared about...

It's a tough knife that cuts great. I have to put mine on the belt grinder now and then to clean it up a bit, and it's ready to rock again.

Overall Bark River is my favorite fixed blade knife company out there!!! I just wish the folder would hurry up!!!! I must agree with everyone who said you cannot go wrong with a Bark River.

Got myself a little Bark River Black Water Boot knife after seeing one in the "What's in your pockets" thread. What an awesome little knife it is!! I can't wait to try out another one!!!!

Goloks are great knives. I have handled a few and they are spectacular. I have not had a chance to use one, though. They are in and out as fast as I can put the on the website!!

Bark River is hands down my favorite knife company.

+99 on Bark River, hell I even went to the plant!

Good stuff

Ron LaBella

PS- the Fox River is my favorite model :)

Yeah, I have yet to hear an ill word about them

The quality and style of the knives are great. He seems to use A2 steel allot, but does use other quality knife steel. I am not a big fan of A2 after owning three of them. Why?

A2 steel is better than the 420HC Buck Knives uses. Buck knives last longer and are easier to sharpen IMHO. It has to be the heat treatment process. A better heat treatment would slow Bark River's production down significantly. For that reason I now seek custom or special addition Buck Knives for use in the field. I don't even go to the other forum anymore.

And last, after personally dealing with the owner of Bark River, he is riding a cloud so high, that if he farted the whole sky would turn brown. This is not a personal attack, just an observation. MV out!

I like Buck knives too, especially their Alpha Hunter and, of course, the 110.

I say ride on Mike Stewart...ride on. Ride the cloud until it dissipates! It's kindly like surfing, you just get up and ride it 'til you fall, or until the wave peters out.
