Bark River Rogue

I have 3 of these, 2 Stag and 1 Black Micarta. I believe this to be the absolute best buy on planet earth in knives. I also believe that Bark River essentially "custom" makes each one as they are all a little different and have slight variations from the individual maker. They are not knives made by "jigs" or on an assembly line as far as I can tell. The design is such that they are very usefull and not just a show piece. Perfectly sized and balanced. Any custom maker would sell these knives for $500 to $1500 in my opinion. The steel is very good (A-2 Tool Steel). In fact I would say these knives are every bit as finely designed and crafted as any custom I've owned. I shouldn't post this as the news on this knife should be kept close to the vest or soon they will cost what they are worth. If I could afford more I'd buy more in a heart beat, especially the Stag. Just my opinion but it comes from owning the knives. Best regards and have a great day.

That are wonderful knives, sharp as heck outta the box, easy to keep sharpened, and darn near custom made here in the USA...besides, Billy is one heck of a good guy to boot...

For me though, the only real question after awhile becomes, 'Which one do I want to keep?'...This week, I'm leaning towards those handled in Orange...

It is a very nice knife, designed in a very historical design. However, I really wish they put a guard on it. A bit too easy for your hand to slip forward. I just never feel comfortable with any user knife without a guard. However, it is a beauty to look at.

I must say that Bark River really does offer great values. Their bone handles do look a lot like genuine stag.

Great looking knife. I too would like to see a guard on it if I were to use it.
The design is cool to look at for sure.

IIRC, the 'Rogue' model was based loosely on a classic 1850's San Francisco style Bowie design...my understanding is that the next large Bark River models are going to be a Spearpoint design from roughly the same era, and one called the 'Boundary Rider' that does have a guarded hilt...

Good stuff for sure! :D

The Rogue Bowie is a sweet looking knife! I too like a handguard though...

About a year ago I picked up what I thought was a Bark River Rogue - turns out it was an older prototype design; large, asymetrical guard, Rio Grande style point with a 'belly' and 5100 steel. It is a very nice looking knife.

However, I'm not keen on the thickness of the handle. Since I bought it over the internet, I wasn't able to hold it in my hand - ended up getting a pretty expensive (for me) knife whose handle I'm not crazy about. Since its micarta, I will most likely just sand it to fit but because it is a relatively rare knife, I almost don't want to do it.

I may take it into the trade area - if I could get enough for it I would probably trade or sell it... Here's a pic:

...Don't think that worked... Okay, here's a link: http://www.marblesknives.com/products.asp?category=Rogue+Bowie+Prototype

James G. Dragon- The knife you have is a prototype that was never put into production. Larry at DLT Trading called it a Rogue, but Bark River didn't call it that. So you have a "DLT Rogue". Instead of selling it, another possibilty would be to send it back to BRKT and have it rehandled.

M/P- Actually, it's based on a knife pictured in the Antique Bowie Knife Book that is supposed to be from the 1830's in a Natchez or "James Black" style. (That is, IIRC.) But don't tell BRL I said that.

This is just the first knife in a whole "Traditional" series Mike Stewart has plans to make. This knife is called a Rogue I. Seven inch blade or so. There will be a Rogue II with a nine inch blade.

For people who want a guard, the Boundary Rider will have a double guard and a choice of Coffin handle or Sabre handle. The Dreaded Spearpoint will also have a guard. (It's Dreaded because Mike Stewart didn't want to make a spearpoint, thinking it wouldn't sell. But his good friends and customers prodded him into trying it.)

Don't get in a hurry for these knives, it'll be a while. This is just stuff I remember from reading the BRKT forum, if I got anything wrong, some Barquero needs to step up and correct me. Anything I say, treat it as rumor until you check it out with Mike Stewart. Some of these plans may be in pencil, not ink, or these knives might get put off because other knives are so popular.

There's one other thing about the Rogue I. These are stick tang knives (not that there's anything wrong with that). If you look at pictures of bone or sheephorn handled knives, they look like full tang knives because they have a brass false tang sandwiched between two pieces of bone or horn. There are a few wood handled knives with the false tang, but most of the wood and all the micarta knives don't have the false tang. (AFAIK so far.)
