Bark River Skinner or Fallkniven F1?

I'm looking for a hiking/outdoor/hunting knife. The design of both knives listed in the title have me interested. I have a few questions though. The Bark River Skinner is listed as having 12C27 steel. Was this knife ever made with A2, and how is the 12C27 steel (is it the same stuff Kershaw is using?) I want an F1 in pure VG-10 (no laminate), how does the F1 compare to the Skinner as far as materials, toughness, design, and sheath quality go? I will not be abusing this knife, just general camp chores and skinning game.

Dollar for dollar I usually prefer Bark River to anything else in a head to head comparison. Hard to beat a barkie.

I have been SERIOUSLY considering buying a Bark River clip point skinner with antique ivory micarta scales myself. I just ordered a Bravo-1 with blaze orange scales the other day as my first Barkie.

I can't say yea or nay on the Fallkniven, but I own several Bark Rivers, and I would be extremely surprised if you could find a knife of equal quality for the price of a Bark River.

And all Bark River knives are 100 percent made in the USA!:)

I have an F1 and really like it - cheap with leather sheath -- think I paid like 80.00? - can't speak to Bark River but I sure have been looking a lot at their knives....

I will throw a curveball and suggest you look at the spyderco manix as well...

If you're looking for a hunting type knife, then the Fällkniven H1 might be ideal, out of the Fällkniven product line, that is. The F1 is good, too.

You're not going to find a solid VG-10 F1, though, not for the normal retail prices. They haven't been in production for a while. Why do you want the solid version?

I just don't like the idea of sandwiched steel, it seems like a cost cut to me. And bammann45, I already have a Manix and love it!

F1 gets my vote! However, I truly dislike the sheath construction. Be aware of the rivets that fasten the belt loop. When inserting my F1 it produced a light scratch on the blade. I know you do not desire laminated VG-10 but I think it is great!

I have nothing but good things to say about Bark River but I think the Highland is a better comparison to the F1.

Which skinner are you talking about? I have the BR Southern Skinner and it's made from A2. I love the ergos and its one of their flatter grinds. Great little knife and highly recommended. I hear that the F1 is a good knife but don't have experience with it so can't comment.

I thought of it as a price cut at first as well, but as more I analyze it, it would be a great benefit if I decide to grind it down if the edge becomes too obtuse. Think of it, would you rather grind down 420 or Vg-10, Vg-10 would probably use up 2 to 3 belts before you get to the profile you want. You really only use the edge anyways.

Fallkniven, Entrek all the way.:)
