Until this morning I didn't know BR made this style of knife. Looks like a Randall model 1 copy, ala Blackjack.

I've handled some of BR's hunting knives, and they seem solid. Are the SOCOMs as good as they look? If so, they're a helluva deal. Where are they made?

I've been looking for a decent, moderately inexpensive knife to recommend to students on a budget (particularly military types) and also as gifts. Who's got experience with these things?

All Barkies are made in Escanaba, MI.

If you're looking at SOCOMs, DLT Trading has them on closeout.

The Blackjack 1-7 is also made by Bark River - the newest version is made in A2 instead of 1095. Very nice knife!

I got one of the SOCOM 5s recently and I'm really happy with it. I've haven't abused it or anything, but it's a solid knife with great balance (right on the guard, and a bit lighter than I expected, but I like it a lot now.) I'm happy with the 1095; it comes out of the box sharp, of course, and cleans up nicely. Much more than a decent knife. I think they are getting hard to find now, but those BJ 1-7's do look good as well...
