Quick Question; Differences between Bark River knife steels, 19c27 and A2? Hopefully I listed those correctly. Thanks

Do You mean 12c27 and A2?

They seem to have moved away from the Sandvik steels and replaced them with steels from Crucible.
They still offer knives in A2.
The difference between A2 and the Sandvik steels are, that A2 is a carbon toolsteel and 12c27 is a basic stainless steel.
Both are good steels, but they will need to be cared for and stored dry after use.

Bark River currently uses:

A2, this Tool Steel has always been their mainstay.

154 CM

CPM 154

CPM S35VN

CPM 3V

CPM M4

CPM D2 and Elmax have each been used on one model each (so far).

But they are always open to testing new steels.

CPM S30V is one they rejected because of how difficult it was to work and sharpen.

Many other steels have been used through the years, including a variety of Carbon Steels like 52100 and the 10XX series, as well as stainless steels from Sandvik, Bohler, even some from Carpenter.

The first Gunny run in stainless was 19C27, now they use CPM S35VN.

Op, the main difference is that 19C27 is stainless and A-2 is not (A-2 is rated tougher). 19C27 never really caught on, not many blades out there made with it. Nothing wrong with it, I had no complaints when I owned one, but there's nothing special about it either.

Sandvik 19C27 Steel is a pure(as in low on contaminants like S and P), stainless, fine grained steel. Not so much popular in western world for some reason, but it is a very good steel if high hardness, fine edge is needed. Several Japanese makers use it in kitchen knives, around 62-64HRC. AISI A2 steel is best known for its toughness.
AFAIK Lone Wolf used 19C27 equivalent Uddeholm AEB-H steel in their folders.

19C27 is a high carbon stainless.
A2 is a high carbon non-stainless.

In the table shown on this page:
http://www.crystalfallstradingcompany.com/barkriverknives-steels.php

19C27 will be similar in performance to 440C or 154CM.

Which is to say that the A2 will be tougher and the 19C27 will have better edge retention. ("wear resistance" equates to "edge retention")

Years ago, Bark River owners made a series of graphs to show how they ranked their relative steels, which shows in the above^ table. As Bark River does a fantastic job with whatever steel they use and produce a blade with a solid design, it was intended to compare only Bark River steels rather than comparing steels. That makes a lot of sense to me because my Bark River holds an edge longer than many other knives I have in steels that have a higher wear resistance, showing the quality of the heat treatment and blade design!
