This beauty arrived the other day from Dale Stoops' Knife Connection.

Here are the specs:
Blade Thickness: .270" very thick and strong

Tang: Full Length

Total Length: 10.875"

Blade Length: 5.5"

Weight: 11.25 Ounces

Handle Material: Blue & Black G10, Matte Finish

Blade-Steel: 154 CM Stainless Steel

Rockwell Hardness: 58 rc

The blade on this knife inspires full confidence for the obvious design purposes, in addition to civilian bushcraft/survival. I can see why the US Marine Corp Recon guys like this knife a lot. The convex grind makes this one very sharp blade and it is at least as sharp out of the box as my Bravo 1, the sharpest knife I have ever owned.Unlike the military version, the top portion of the blade is unsharpened. It has a full tang that fills the handle and the thickness of the blade material is such that I had to get longer screws for the vise of my Wicked Edge Sharpener that I use to maintain convex edge with the provided leather strops and diamond paste.

The knife feels very good even in my relatively small hand and although it is heavy, it is also well balanced, so no problem there. The grip just feels right and as advertised it has a tendency to right itself in your hand when you pick it up. One of the two small niggles that I have, is with the G-10 slabs where they meet with the lanyard attachment...it has a very sharp uncomfortable edge to it,but I have rounded that off with a little sanding. It is OK now. The other niggle is with the matte black paint job on the upper blade near the hilt...mine at least has a small amount of fine overspray from the painting process.
Outside of those very minor cons, I am very pleased and impressed with the knife. I have been looking for a tactical knife to present to top graduates at the Canadian Royal Military College (like West Point Candian version) who will be going into out elite special-force regiment JTF2 and headed for Afghanistan. This will be my small way of doing my bit to help our brothers doing an extremely dangerous job far behind enemy lines supporting NATO and American troops. I see the STS-5 as being entirely appropriate for this job.
I have however found the sheath difficult to deal with and even after watching the YouTube video regarding this problem, I still find it noisy and hard on my soft, lily-white hands!

I will be searching for an alternative sheath for my knife. Looking at it from a tactical point of view, I think the supplied sheath would be too noisy when stealth is of the essence, but that is only my opinion.
I am editing here an adding that I have replaced the sheath for a BR Leather Sheath...and a very sturdy and quality scabbard it is! It is easy to extract and insert the knife and is totally noiseless, which makes it an essential for any military use IMO. The leather is of the highest quality saddle material and I have rubbed in a beeswax/leather cream mix which has nicely darkened the sheath and it is now well protected from the elements. This knife sheath is a spine lock type which opens with a snap. The way the knife nests in there, it will not easily fall out even when the sheath is unsnapped. See the pictures to see how the fine design accomplishes this.

I am totally pleased with the knife, so score another excellent design and superb quality knife for Mike and his team of craftsmen. How many designs can you possibly have in there Mike?
I would be remiss if I didn't mention how pleased I am with Dale Stoops' service over at the Knife Connection...fast, courteous and pure pleasure to experience in these times. Top notch!

Cheers

Thanks for the review on this knife as I havent seen or heard much about it. The sheath looks pretty cool and I like how it retains the blade. Good on you if you are going to provide these to your graduates...I am sure they will appreciate it:thumbup:

You are very welcome mate! :)
I intend to give one each session to the graduate with the greatest excellence shown over the year. I will have it engraved with his/her name and it will be in a presentation box...if I ever find a suitable one.

Best regards
Leo

I have heard of them making an STS 7. That would be even more popular with my old unit. Many of us used to carry the Gerber MkII for combat use back in my day and the knife served very well.

It would sure give the guys something to shoot for,top honors,at graduation.

It is my way of honoring these guys who go out into the mountains of Afghanistan in pairs, far behind enemy lines to support their comrades from many nations. Their work saves many lives both Canadian and American while risking their own.

Cheers

You hear correctly. They are working on a STS-6 and an STS-7 to add to the line of STS-3 and STS-5. I will be keeping my eye out for these in case they are even more suitable for my presentation.
I had a Gerber Mk II in my collection from the early 1980's but it was stolen...I must get one of the new ones to fill that gap/

Best regards mate

Just a post-script here regarding the STS-5 and its leather sheath. Whoever designed the sheath did so with sheer genius. Not only did this person make it so the knife nests safely in there even when unsnapped and/or inverted vertically, but getting to the knife in a hurry must have been utmost in his or her mind. I just discovered, if you reach for the knife while it is locked in its scabbard and extend your thumb as you do so, the snap comes open effortlessly, without thinking about it and the knife can be instantly pulled for duty. Kind of like a quick draw holster I once had many moons ago.
Brilliant design! Kudos to the designer if you ever read this! I would buy you a beer if I could! Maybe several!

I paused for a break here and when I got back to finish...

As it turns out Mike Stewart of Bark River Knives fame told me a short while ago, that the design, and I quote," ...was done by Reid Hyken of Sharpshooter Sheath systems.
The goal I wanted in the sheath was that of a man named Paris Theodore.
Paris had a Holster & Sheath shop in NYC and was a master of concealment and rapid deployment.
The "In Your hand" action of the sheath is just like Paris used to make for me back in the 70s.
Reid got it right on.
Perfect for this model.
The STS-5 is not for Elk Skinning."

Too true! You don't need a quick draw knife sheath for elk do you?!! :D
I hope Mike doesn't mind my using his words!

Cheers

An excellent review and fantastic gesture for the graduates! I would imagine they will get right to work sharpening the swedge, putting another convex grind on the top.

.27" of 154 CM - nice!

Thanks Randy! No doubt they would sharpen it up first chance they get...before they get busy.

I think I will keep a knife that may be into serious business with G10 scales, but I want wood for my STS-5. What do you think mate! Can you make a good set of wood scales to precisely match the G10's on this beast of mine?!! :D

Thanks for dropping on by my friend. Much appreciated.

Best to you

Sure! I bet that would be a really nice addition. Maybe desert ironwood or amboyna burl. The choices are endless! Le me know!

Mike Stewart tells me that the next STS knife will be an STS-8...what a monster that will be! It will be awhile as he hasn't done the drawings yet,but my understanding is that the 8 will be follwed by a 6 and 7 over time.

Hi mate
Maybe you can keep your eyes peeled for either one of those woods, preferably with burl but not necessarily if you find something special. I will keep my eyes open too and that way we won't miss something special like the book matched Maple blanks you found for me.
I will deposit the amount soon in PayPal. Thank you so very much! Finding you was a great thing...good old serendipity eh!

Warm regards Randy
