I just saw the STS 5 on the Knives ship for free site and it looks like a real winner. It looks like a fantastic combat blade but.....

has anyone seen it without the top edge?? Without the top edge it would make a superb combat and survival blade. That is you could baton with it, place your thumb on the back for control, use the top square edge for scraping, etc etc.

Someone said that the STS3 was like a stainless/choiless version of the RC3. I guess if the STS5 was available without the top edge it would be like a stainless/choiless version of the RC5. What do you rekon?

The top edge is a "false edge", thinned but not sharp. It may be a little harder on the baton but how many cords of wood are you going to baton before you discard the baton and move on to the next campsite?

The top edge does not go all the way back to the handle so unless your thumb is a lot longer than mine there is plenty of room to rest your thumb.

It appears that the knife is partially coated like there necker. Since the squared part of the top edge is coated, it does not make for a good striker edge. I always carry a GoinGear striker anyway rather than use my knife.

I admit I do not have this knife but do have the STS-3 with the false edge which has the same characteristics. Besides the false edge looks better.
