Greetings all,
You don't see much play here about Bark River Knives, I was wondering who here has a Sandstorm A. This knife has caught my eye as I love Chute style knives. I confess I don't know much about 12c27 steel though.
So: Who has a Barkie with 12c27?
Who has a Sandstorm A? What is the sheath like?

I am not totally unfamiliar with Bark Rivers, I do have a Mini Canadian... and it is a wonderful little knife. Mike Stewart is certainly a class act, and has wonderful customer service.

Please chime in about the steel and the knife in particular if you have experience with them.

Thanks, Mongo

Mongo: I too have been wanting the Sandstorm A!! It looks like an awesome knife.

You might want to check at the Bark River Knife Forum located at the "knife forum" with a similiar name to this one.

It is a pretty active group and you should find lots of Bark River info and, "yes," the Sandstorm A looks like a nice knife!

mongo,

I have handled many Bark River knives.... that being said this is one youd be silly not to get!

The Sandstorm is a bad ass specimen if I ever saw one! I have very diverse tastes in knives and that one is damn fine!

get one, you wont be disappointed!

Ron

Isn't there anyone here that has a 12c27 Bark River knife? How well does it hold it's edge? How easy to sharpen? Anyone have a Sandstorm-A? Sheath????

Bueller? Bueller?

I have a Mountaineer, a 12C27 Barkie, and a Mikro Canadian (another 12C27 knife). They are both excellent knives.

12C27 is a nice steel, used in most of the Scandi knives. It takes and holds a good edge. However, Mike gives it an awesome heat treat that improves the performance a lot.

So far all the Bark River knives I've bought have consistently been excellent quality knives. I've used them hard (I pretty much chopped through a house with my Forester on a SAR mission) and they've held up beautifully.

I'm seriously considering getting a Sandstorm, the only thing stopping me is that I spent too much on knives in the past few months.

Bark River knives should only be purchased by experienced knife users. They have a convex grind and are way to sharp for a new user or anyone careless. I have the "Huntsman" model. It is not too big and has a good blade guard because one slip with these doggies and it is off to the ER for stitches (unless you bleed out first). They are very sharp A2 steel blades for serious users only.

This is a good stainless steel. Very fine grain and gets very sharp and holds a good edge. No it is not a CPM but P,J. Tomes uses it and others for folders and it hold up very well. I would take it over ATS-34 but that is my impression. Heat treatment is everything. I like A-2 it works well in longer blades where D-2 does not excell ( More then 8" ) It also works in smaller blades but has a low chome content, comapred to D-2. Trade offs VS. price and performance still a common question. 12C27 is part of a series which includes 13C26, and 19C27. take a look on the Sandvik page for details.

Be well
Floyd

Well, I went ahead and ordered a Sandstorm-A today. I will post impressions and maybe even pics if I can figure that out, when she comes.

CONGRATS on the Sandstorm A!! That knife looks awesome! And I have been jonesing for one for awhile now. As an aside my Slither (and much to my surpise, a micro Barkie arrived today), arrived. WOW. This is a great knife. The Palm swell fits my hand like a glove. It has the green micarta handle. And boy is this bad boy sharp!!! I am wicked happy. I got this knife in trade too. And the gentleman sent me a mini or micro Barkie as well. I love 'em!! I love my Barkies!! Next arriving will be the Fieldmaster I sent out for re-furb, AND Mike Stewart said he was going to send out my prize knife with it!!
