I am thinking about a Bark River for every day carry for work. I am undecided on the blade steels, the 12c27 or A-2. I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

Also, what is a good source for purchasing the Bark Rivers?

Lastly, how do you sharpen a convex edge? Can this be done with a sharp maker? Or is it better to do it on a strop? If so, what is a good source for a strop and what qualities does one look for in purchasing a strop?

Thanks

What do you need the knife for? What kind of tasks? Do you work in a moist environment?

The 12c27 will be more corrosion resistant than the A2. They are both good steels.

I sharpen my Barkies like I sharpen all my other knives... with a butcher's steel, a ceramic rod, with a quick stop on plain cardboard to finish.

The A2 will hold it's edge slightly longer than the 12C27, but the latter will better resist oxidation. They are both very good steels as made by BRKT.

Sharpen using a simple leather strop. You can find the best selection of BRKT knives along with their sharpening compounds (black for sharpening, green for finishing) at :

www.knivesshipfree.com

Also, make sure to check out the convex sharpening tutorial at www.barkriverknives.com.

If you'd like to maintain the convex grind, stropping is the way to go. I've been using the "mouse pad and 2,000 grit sand paper" method. I've read that Bark River makes a stop. You should be able to find it and other strops on line.

I can't help with on line stores. I bought my Fox River in a store.

Good hunting!

I bought the mini northstar, from knifesupply.com. 12c27 steel. It came razor sharp, and it makes a good edc knife. I can`t answer your sharpening question, As I have always sharpened freehand with stones. The convex is my favorite edge, and all my knives are ground this way , except my Puukos, These have flat grinds.

I prefer stainless as food prep features a lot in my life, inside and out. I also don't like having to ward off rust. Nevertheless, their A2 is excellent cutlery steel, it's a matter of choice.

Bark River has a vast range and you'll find something you like and more:thumbup but watch out for slippery when wet micarta handles, no joke with these keen edges:eek: They make really excellent small knives and some inspiring big ones too, my only reservation is about the sheathes. I really dislike the fact that the knife rides so high, you get a very nasty jab in the ribs every time you sit down to rest, eat or get in the car. Dangler or horizontal carry is much more practical, esp with a small knife. But others likely see it differently.

I concur with the on-line choices so far but can add mcknightcutlery.com to the list, they've served me flawlessly and handle international orders very well:thumbup: You'll end up with a half dozen BRKTs by this time next year, at least:D

Thanks for the replies. The environment is not a factor, just ease of sharpening and general maintenance of the specific steels. The knife will be used mainly for cutting boxes and miscellaneous light chores.

The best spot I've found for buying anything are the forums. If you don't mind something used, which usually means handled and ogled and thats it, then you shouldn't have any problems on here. Except for the sporadic listings of Barkies.

On the steel: A2, no question. Very tough and there are few steels out there that sharpen up as nice. Even though not stainless, not overly prone to corrosion either

If that's the case, I would go with the BR TUSK.

Woodland Spl. 3" blade and your choice of handle. BRK&T are doing a batch of them right now. Post what you get!

I just bought a MIni Canadian with CF scales, from Crystal Falls Trading Company...good prices and excellent service they shipped USPS priority, the same day I ordered, and I ordered after 3:00pm.

I'm having a custom pocket sheath made up, with a pocket clip, for a 1 hand draw..this will replace my work EDC...no more concerns with folder/lock strength:D

I'm hooked on the little Barkies and am going to order a new PSK pretty soon if I can't find a trade....I'm starting to get real impatient:D I'm also hoping to find a trade for a Mikro I/II, but they don't seem to pop up to often and when they do there gone in a blink of an eye.

THAT one is niiiiiice!

Although I don't "EDC" it (the Fallkniven WM1 is my every day small fixed), this one would be a good choice: The Huntsman.

Here's a comparison shot for you. If I were to suggest a daily carry out of these and these only, I'd probably agree with DaveReb and suggest a mini-Canadian (though mine's not quite as nice as his with the carbon fiber scales!!). The mini-Canadian is the sharpest knife in our home...... it could be a surgeon's scalpel.

My EDC choice is a black Micarta Huntsman - in a 'KSF leather pocket sheath' from knivesshipfree.com. I also stretched the 3/8" firesteel pocket for a River Rock TM-311X 2xAAA LED flashlight, butthe Peak Solutions Matterhorn is an easier fit. Derrick at KSF can set you up. I bought my four other Bark River knives, a Fox River, Gameskeeper, '07 LE North Star, and an '07 T.U.S.K. , from Larry at DLT Trading - super folks there, too - buying the Bark River knives is addictive - and injurious to your wallet. I EDC that combo in a front cargo pants or jeans pant pocket with no trouble. Sufficient woods-walking knife for most hikes, even in the urban jungle (Great letter & package opener!).

I edc a PSK in the KSF leather pouch. It is an amazing little knife that has impressed me more than I knew it would. I will take a pic when i get a camera.

I don't know...I like your mini-Canadian even more than the example with CF...yours is one of the nicest handle materials I've ever seen!

Great Barkie collection!
