I got a mini northstar in a trade, and I have come to like it a good deal. The 12C27 seems to hold a good edge, but it is awfully thin compared to my other Barkies in A2.

Is this a knife I should take it easy on? It looks like it will make a great EDC b/c it is so light and small, but has anyone ever used one of these in the woods for harder work?

Thanks,
John

Makes a great edc. Mine has held up just fine.Great for small game. I wouldn`t baton with it though.

My Mini Northstar is my favorite EDC fixed blade. All my other Barkies are in A2, but this mini-ns in 12c27 has never let me down! It has seen alot of use. Takes and holds a great edge, very user friendly, ......... If Mike makes another run I'm gonna get at least one more.

The MNS is my favorite Barkie. Mine has taken some punishment, albeit of a somewhat unusual nature (I was struck by lightning wearing it).

The 12C27 and thin blade sharpen up well. MNS is the star of the sharpening videos I did for KSF. At first I was skeptical of the unglamorous, ho-hum 12C27, but I like the stainless for neck carry (sweat) and in coastal environments. My other Barkies are A2 and it seems that I can get the A2 knives just marginally sharper than the 12C27. If the MNS was available in A2 I would get at least one.

In any event, I will soon be trading off a batch of other knives, including other popular BRKT models, and high on my wanted list will be the Mini Northstar.

It's great on trout, but that's not especially demanding work. I have done some light batoning with it and it's been fine. In a freak occurence, mine caught a spark from a firesteel on a trip last fall and the remarkably long-lived spark (curl?) burned a nick into the edge, but I think just about any steel would do this.

At 2.6 oz (mine with maple and hollow pins), it sure is a LOT of cutting performance for the weight and size.

Tradja,

You should not cross-forum link. Normally it's not a good idea to promote another website in direct competition with where your posting, for free I might add.

I didn't realize that it was frowned upon - it just happened to be where I wrote it up.

Link removed.

Back OT, the MNS is a great knife!

Thanks guys for your thoughts on the mini northstar. I Tried to carry it Sat., but found it be somewhat of a hassle while I carried my pistol. The Barkie sat that trip out. Today I had school, so I did not carry my pistol and I thought it would be a good time to try out the barkie. It carried very well and if I can some how get over the the strange feeling of the knife behind my pistol, I can see this becoming my EDC.

Thanks again,
John

Yeah, trying to carry a pistol and knife on the belt strong-side can get crowded and awkward.

That's why I mostly neck carry the MNS and leave the belt for the pistol and mag. On occasion, I have belt-carried a fixed blade either on the weak side or horizontal in front (Dozier kydex), but found it to be both awkward and too much on the belt in both cases.

I carry all my Barkies cross draw on weak side. I didn't think I would like it till I tried it. Very happy with Mini Northstar in cross draw!

I pretty much use kydex paddle holsters for my pistols and, depending on the placement of the belt loops on the particular pear of pants I'm wearing at that time, there's normally room for a mini-Northstar or larger right behind the holster.

Ok. This isn't exactly a report of "field use", but take it for what it's worth. We went to watch a high schrewel wrestling match a couple of weekends ago in a distant town. After the match, we went out to eat at a Golden Corral (kind of like a cafeteria/buffet style restaurant...sorta). Well, they were busy and there were no knives anywhere. I happened to be wearing my mini-Northstar that evening. Has anyone ever tried to cut a steak or other meat with a properly sharpened convex edge? It's like using a light saber! (IF you've ever tried one of those). It is truly like cutting warm butter. My mini shined that evening ((( :D )))
