I am looking to get a Barlow for my Father In-law. For the past several years he has carried a Limited Edition Case Barlow with dark blue jigged bone. This Barlow has been pretty much the only knife he carries & he uses it hard. I've actually come to hate this Barlow. At some point & time he tried to sharpen it on his belt sander & put a slight recurve to the blade & messed up the edge angles. You see his hands shake a bit & it is difficult for him to sharpen it anymore. So I became the default sharpener. It took me a good chunk of time to correct the belt sander sharpening. Well recently he dropped it & cracked a portion of the jigged bone off. It is also dull as a butter knife again & looks like he was using it to scrape paint off something. So I am looking to get him a replacement. Something in carbon steel & under $50 preferably. I'd looked at the new AG Russell Barlow, but I am unsure if he'd dislike the lock, much less be able to unlock it. He also seems to prefer 2 blade Barlows over single blades. I'd tried finding some Boker Barlows, but they seem scarce. Any other suggestions?

Thanks - Pat.

Plenty of Schrade USA barlows on the bay. Keep an eye on the for sale area here if you have time.

Check a certain famous auction site. I see one right now in new condition and carbon steel blades for well under your price limit.

Good Luck!

Bear and Sons has a couple of carbon Barlows.

There's also Utica Kutmaster. The Kutmasters are said to have soft springs, which more people seem to view as a fault than as an asset. If somebody's hand strength is not what it was, though, it might be a good thing.

The Kutmasters come in four models, two stainless and two 1095 carbon. I think Catskill and Big Pine are the carbons.
