I went online and tried to find the earliest written reference to Barlow knives and couldn't find anything definitive. I recently purchased a store ledger dated 1818 from Dover, Tennessee and one of the entries in the ledger was for a Barlow knife. Just wondering if anyone has seen any earlier references? Thanks.

supposedly Barlow knives date back to the mid-late 1600's in England. I haven't been able to find much by the way of references or pictures though. Hopefully your post will dig up some info.

You might get more response in the Traditional Knives forum.

See your copy of Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values.

Your answer is in there. Unfortunately, I don't have mine with me.

Thanks I had read that already but the mention of Barlow knives in Twain's works occurred approx. 60 years later than the entry in the ledger.
