I just recieved a boker tree brand barlow in trade it appears to be an older model with stron backsprings and good firm half stops... although this model was once popular... it seems it has been outshined in recent years by the more common trapper and stockman patterns.. iIt seems only a few reputable commercial manufacturers produce the little 2 bladed gems, and even fewer in carbon steel.. I was wondering why? as I think it is a handy dandy little pattern. Thanks.

I love Barlows. Got one in my pocket right now...a Boker. I wish that there were more of them.

I got one in my pocket right now too. A custom by Ray Smith.

The Rust crybabies that do not know how to care for a carbon blade has a lot of manufacturers using stainless now. You have a Classic!

I recall reading someplace a long time ago, that of all the knives shipped west from 1850 to 1870, the plain jane Russell's Barlow was the most popular selling knife, hands down.

When I was a kid, just about every kid's first knife was one of those Imperail Barlows with the shell handles that fell off in a few months of use.

Today, I don't think many people really apreatiate a simple work horse of a pocket knife if it donsen't have all kinds of gimmiks.

Did you just say Jane Russell's Barlow?

(Sorry. Couldn't help it :D)

Now that's a knife, Rob!!!

Mary gave him a bran-new "Barlow" knife worth twelve and a half cents; and the convulsion of delight that swept his system shook him to his foundations. True, the knife would not cut anything, but it was a "sure-enough" Barlow, and there was inconceivable grandeur in that - though where the Western boys ever got the idea that such a weapon could possibly be counterfeited to its injury, is an imposing mystery and will always remain so, perhaps.
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

All the stores was along one street. They had white domestic awnings in front, and the country-people hitched their horses to the awning-posts. There was empty dry-goods boxes under the awnings, and loafers roosting on them all day long, whittling them with their Barlow knives; and chawing tobacco, and gaping and yawning and stretching - a mighty ornery lot.

I have a couple of Barlows that I carry but the one I use most often is an imperial that I ripped the shell handles off and replaced them with 12 oz jigged leather scales. Feels great in the hand and the carbon blades get razor sharp and hold an edge well.

Regards

Robin

Well I keep reading great things about this pattern, and don't own a single Barlow! Well at least till the end part of this year anyway.:D

Jigged leather scales? I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before.

Could you post pictures of it please?

The Böker Russell Barlow in carbon is a well-made, value, working knife. I like the sawn bone handles a great deal.Mine sees plenty of use in the garden, the bolster is brushed stainless which is a useful feature.

The GEC No.25 is a Barlow variant and, caters for carbon voters. Well made but comes a lot more expensive than the Böker.

I am more of a Rita Hayworth fan, but Jane Russell could easily jump to the front of the line. Did someone say she carried a Barlow?

My current one and only has been a GEC #25 with a Wharncliffe main blade. This thing is sharp as a razor and has been my watchpocket edc for about 7 months now.

I like the look of that AG Russell barlow though.

Right now my favorite Barlow is my Fight'n Rooster one handed man pattern.

My all time favorite has been gifted to a nephew, it was the first knife my dad gave me and I have passed it along...
